Sounds like from the reports that I read that this is one of those funky ones where he fell and hit his helmeted head on a rock, was fully conscious after, even apparently as he was flown to the hospital, and then the intracranial swelling from the trauma started increasing and he went critical quickly. If the neurosurgeons were able to quickly enough remove some of his skull to allow the swelling to occur in his brain without the brain essentially "strangling" itself inside the intact skull, he should have a decent chance at a relatively "normal" recovery. If the intracranial pressure wasn't able to be controlled in time, then there is a very real chance of permanent brain damage or worse

Fingers crossed as by far and away Michael Schumacher is one of my, and many F1 fans, favorite drivers of all time

A minute from the Alta exit off the I-15!
Schumacher is among the greatest of champions in the racing world. By far the most successful F1 driver. Hope he makes it through this.

Not really an F1 fan (I'd take NASCAR or Indycar any day), but I've seen many a races where you can really see his driving perfection.

Sad news; he's one helluva driver.

Goes to show, even with all the gear, this sport has risks.
