Since it's six months till xmas and the start of winter and since it's swampy here in philly today I started to think about those first fall nights when you feel the chill in the air. You know those nights in the middle of october when you first taste the winter coming and get really excited. I can't wait.
So with that in mind- when's the first freeze where you are? (meaning low temp is below 32 degrees)

Center City Philly 10/30

Forever the optimist, I'm going to guess early. For NW CT - October 12. Remember, first frost here means the default colors will go back to winter/blue! :)

Well, the north country of NY? its soon...early-mid Oct I am guessing?

Where I grew up in Buffalo it was fairly common to have snow on Halloween.

I have not lived here for an entire season yet, but climatology says that the average date for the first frost is September 24th. It's very rural here, and the temperature drops down quite a bit at night, so that sounds reasonable.

On Long Island we had frost in Lake Grove on October 1st last year and it was normal to have it happen no later than Columbus Day.

Late September or early October. First dusting in the 20s of October.

Long term forcasts show some very cold air moving in around day 15. Looks like it could get down to the lower 40's in places like Saranac. If that's the case - could the peaks be looking at the first 32 degree night?

We always seem to get a very cool and dry week during the second or third week in August.

I'm predicting intense heat through Christmas, with a gradual cooling off by the middle of January.

I figure most resorts will be able to make snow around MLK weekend.

I predict that, long range, temperatures will be at or above normal, with an approximately even chance of below average temperatures. The first hard freeze for the northeast will likely occur within 60-90 days of teh average historical date of a hard freeze, with the first hard frost occuring 90-120 days prior to that. First measurable snowfall will occur within 4 months of Christmas, and there is a high probability that the last snowfall will occur within 8 months after that.

You can take these predictions to the bank.

I was thinking the same thing about everyone else who posted here.

We went through this last year, all these predictions about winter and all it did was postpone it until January. What I wrote is pretty much what happened last year. When will everyone learn it's just bad mojo to try to predict when winter will come?

I'm waiting for the "When will the first ski area opening occur" thread to start.

So, my post here was just a bad mojo antidote.

This is my favorite part of summer...gets the birch trees in my yard to start turning.

Only concern I have is that if it stays cool now then we'll be paying for it in 85 degree days in late September/early October...:-?
