Do what you can and don't have any expectations. A lot of mountains will let you ride the magic carpet or equivalent without a lift ticket so if you live close to a mountain that might be a better option. More time moving/sliding and less time standing around (i.e. you carrying him up the hill).

our progression, starting at 3, was checking out equipment, putting equipment on and getting pushed around the back yard, going down to local hill and watching people, getting pushed around magic carpet area...last year at 4 we started back up where we left off, then moved on to lessons, which resulted in a huge jump in ability (surprise surprise), followed by more practice at local hill...so far so good...and if i could offer one piece of advice: always quit while you're ahead...one sage old instructor told me they'll always remember the last 5 minutes, so if you're going good, stop while they're still having fun, and they'll remember that it was a fun thing to do and want to do it again
We're a step closer. Thanks to the guys at Utah Ski & Golf my little one is now all ready for the ski season. Skis, boots, helmet, goggles, and a lot of excitement for her first season. They were great....easy set-up, good gear, and a good deal. We are in a program where she gets free gear upgrades until she is like 13. So I think we are all set. They had PINK skis for her along with a white and PINK helmet, PINK goggles, and even a neat cupcake hat. She is excited...was running around the shop. Can't say enough about these guys. For folks visiting Utah, look them up for rentals and discount tix. We rented from them in 2010 when we visited and had a great experience.

I remember those days when my kids were first starting out. Mot sure if parents or the kids are more excited. Admit it TB - you are already picturing her skiing with you 3 years down the road when she will be able to almost every trail with you!

Great pics! At what age/size do shops typically offer hard shell boots for kids? I'd like to get my son into one of these seasonal leasing packages ASAP but he wont even be 2 until early Feb this winter so I'm most likely going to just use the plastic lucky bums skis with normal winter boots.

Awesome time to start. Usually at 3, it's more a little bit of skiing, and much snacks and playtime. But that's how they get started.
My son's first season's pass was at 5 months old at Mount Snow. Of course he couldn't ski, but it was a cool souvenir for $15 (price at that time for the 5 and under crowd). We put magnetic strips on the back of our passes and attach them to the fridge.
The funny thing is that at the passholders appreciation party, they had a contest for youngest passholder. We missed it. I was in the bathroom changing his diaper.

I agree that you would be better off waiting until next season for the hard shell boots.
The boots fit her perfectly and she stomped around in them saying she was a penguin. So far so good!
