I remember this "survey" from last year. The website is terrible and there is no decription of how the survey was conducted. I can't believe I've waisted 2 minutes of my life looking at this.

p.s. what happened to the old "eyeroll" emoticon?

Looks like a totally legitimate survey and results to me.

The only issues that I have are that Saddleback should have placed in the Top 5 in more poll categories and that they include The Killington Access Road in the FAVORITE DESTINATION SKI VILLAGE category. Everyone knows that an “access road” is not a “ski village”.

I just did a quick click.

Looked at the 2010 results:

Favorite Resorts Over 1100 Feet
1. Whiteface, NY
2. Sugarloaf, ME
3. Sunday River, ME
4. Mont Sutton, QC
5. Killington, VT
6. Bristol Mountain, NY
7. Windham Mountain, NY
8. Loon Mountain, NH
9. Saddleback Mountain, ME
10. Gunstock Mountain, NH

Canada
1. Mont Tremblant
2. Mont Sutton
3. Mont-Sainte-Anne
4. Marble Mountain
5. Owl’s Head
6. Mont Blanc
7. Mont-Sainte-Sauveur
8. Mont Olympia
9. Mont Orford
10. Stoneham Mountain

Wow, just W O W!!!!

Marble. There is enough people that went to Marble to make it number 4. That is in Newfoundland. Olympia no. 8, really? I'm thinking too few respondents here. Olympia wouldn't make my top 40 in Quebec.

Oh yeah, now can Mont Sutton be no. 4 overall and Tremblant not in the top 10 when in the Canadian breakdown Tremblant is above no. 4 overall Sutton???

This year...

FAVORITE EASTERN RESORT
1. SADDLEBACK, ME
2. WHITEFACE MOUNTAIN, NY
3. KILLINGTON, VT
4. BRISTOL MOUNTAIN, NY
5. BELLEAYRE MOUNTAIN, NY
6. BROMLEY MOUNTAIN, VT
7. HUNTER MOUNTAIN, NY
8. OKEMO MOUNTAIN, VT
9. JAY PEAK, VT
10. MONT-SAINTE-ANNE, Q

FAVORITE CANADIAN RESORT
1. MONT-SAINTE-ANNE
2. MONT TREMBLANT
3. LE MASSIF
4. MONT BLANC
5. OWL’S HEAD
6. MONT SUTTON
7. STONEHAM MOUNTAIN
8. MONT OLYMPIA
9. BROMONT
10. MONT SAINTE-SAUVEUR

Oh yeah, I didn't know that Quebec City was a ski village? Is Salt Lake City a ski town?

It appears that many of the voters live in either the NY/NJ/PA metropolis or Canada, which has skewed the results. Tannersville, PA (Camelback) as the 8th best destination ski village? I live in PA and CBK is my "home" mountain. If you consider an outlet mall, a couple gas stations and generally run-down hotels allong I-80 a "Destination Ski Village", then I suppose so. (no dis to CBK, as they do a great job with what they have)

Olympia no. 8, really?

This is particularly mind-boggling. I taught my son how to ski at Olympia. At age 5 he had skied all the runs there. We took him to Jay Peak the same year and after one run he said: 'I don't want to ski Olympia anymore'.

The fact that it made the list is enough to completely discredit this survey. It is a fine hill to teach a very young kid and that's about it. The mascot is the best thing about that hill.

I suspect there is nothing but rudimentary authentication by the poll. As such, I could stack the deck by voting multiple times or asking everyone associated with the area to vote.

All of these polls are simply a popularity contest, and primarily a representation of whose customer base chooses to vote. That said, I enjoy some of them (Ski Magazine for example- yeah that's right, flame away), as I simply find them fun to read, and they do often represent public perception at least, to some degree. That said, this one is so far out in left field that it simply has no value whatsoever.

This one, compared to Ski, probably didn't respect the minimum requirements to make it credible. I'm still blown away that Olympia would a top 10 list of Eastern Canada. It could MAYBE make a top 10 of Laurentians ski areas, popularity contest or chosen by a group of experts.

My guess is that they were so few respondents to answer the question...there is no way it could be no. 8 in Quebec.

+ 1. All it indicates are the places where their readers ski/ride most often. Big deal. I recall reading a copy a few years ago. Lots of potential and a good idea, but it was half-baked and full of errors.

The "favorite Classic Resort" results had me laughing at many of the top 10!

I just got the press release in my email from Saddleback touting their position on the survey.

I guess people love Top 10 lists.
