My friend and I have coordinated with Belleayre mountain to provide free lift tickets, instruction, and equipment for under-privileged children from NYC. We will bring in "buddy" skiiers and riders from my high school to group up with these people. All we need is to find a school in the city and pay for a bus up. We have contacts at schools so that's not the issue. It was originally planned to be very soon, but should we postpone and wait until the snow is decent? Any input is appreciated!

Can't give you advice on weather (pun intended) or not (doubly intended), but I'd at least like to thank you for the effort in giving people the ability to try something they wouldn't be able to otherwise.

Definatly a good deed, and the fact that it's to ski/board, even better. :)

Thanks. I just think that coming up to Belleayre with a bus full of kids for only two trails seems sort of pointless (it's going to be their first time and I think there are only a few beginner trails open). February is supposed to get cold and snowy, so maybe then.

When where you thinking of going?

And have you considered approaching other areas?

I personally feel this is very worthwhile, and it couldn't hurt to ask for help from others who may have contacts or resources as well.

It was tentatively going to be the last Friday in January I believe. We approached Belleayre because it is only about 20 minutes from my high school, so transporting the "buddy" students should be very easy. Also, Belleayre is state owned and my friends and I know a lot of people who work "higher-up" at Belleayre. I guess if it is successful the first time, we might try to expand the program to more than one time or other areas.

never-evers

If most of your trip is never-evers or newbies, there is no need to wait. Most places concentrate on having adequate green trail coverage. Your key, as others suggest, is to select a resort based on open trail count. You don't want every skill level skiing on the same trails - traffic jams - congestion = unhappy times for all.

It's quite likely that lots of new terrain is going to open by this weekend. Lots of places hold trails in "reserve" for the weekend, when things are marginal (like it has been.) I would suggest calling the resort and seeing how many trails will be open for the weekend. Then you've got enough info to decide.
