To me wood is the way to go.... I love the pop of the wood and the smell outside. Some people don't like to deal with the mess and the work with all the wood. You?

When we have a fire going I tend to spend more time playing with the fire than doing anything else.... and I like it.
I am looking at wood pellet stove just to have a backup heat source now. Wood pellet stoves don't require an expensive chimney. Not sure how fuel efficient they are.
Did wood for 6 years. Moved to house with no wood stove. Eventually replaced fuel oil boiler and domestic hot water coil with Buderus Fuel Oil boiler and 40 gallon domestic hot water tank about 10 years ago. The domestic hot water tank is like an extra zone. During the summer the Buderus boiler only turns on once or twice a day depending on domestic hot water usage. Heat going up the chimney also much lower. Buderus cut my fuel oil bill in HALF. There are some excellent smart furnances and boilers out there that measure outside and inside air temp with smart setback thermostats.

A friend of mine just bought a pellet stove to use this winter. The thing that bothers me about those is that if they decide to raise the price of the pellets, or discontinue them, you are screwed. With wood, you always have a source for it- at least around here. Will be interesting to see how it works for them this winter.
In my view, choosing a gas fireplace over wood is like choosing a plastic Christmas tree over a nice fresh cut one.
