K rules for snow making

I remember skiing November 3rd last season as they were making snow big time to get ready. Then there was a huge dump before Thanksgiving.

I'm smiling after looking at that pic! I'm heading up on 11/21! I hope the weather cooperates. I had planned on going on 11/22 last year and it rained, wiping out much of that great early season snow shown in your pic. The timing was just bad as I think I remember it improving a lot towards the end of November. I am definitely ready!

r-word

Yep, there was maybe like two times the r-word got this region last season. I remember being at Killington when it rained and the beach was like soupy slush. I think it quickly recovered. Other than that and a windy/very cold spell later on, the 02-03 was rule! I can only hope for an as good season this year.

I'll probably be down to Killington for my first trip of the season since I'm expecting them to be ready for opening first. I'm expecting for this to occur in November, the earlier the better. Last year I had an all-east pass but I doubt I'll get one this year because I'm living in the Mad River valley. I'll probably use my Sugarbush pass, maybe get a Mad River pass or a Stowe pass for night skiing.

Hey, that's no excuse! It's less than 800 miles from Cincinnati to Rutland...

Could possibly open Saturday with enough snow and if they started the guns, although warm temps ahead K will probably wait until early November to open and go full bore on guns to get ready for Thanksgiving like they did last year. As I said before I'm expecting to ski Killingon somewhere between November 3rd and the 12th as an opening.

But what do I know. Let's hope for cold temps.

It just occurred to me that embedded images from other sources is probably not a great idea. Not only does it rob bandwidth, but it slows the thread load a bit. Please simply post URLs to the images. Thanks!

My pic was 154k, not bad for dsl or broadband. Loads in under a second. Dialup would be several seconds. I usually post 10k or less thumbnails to forums when postiing multiple images. The images are linked to their source and does not rob any bandwidth from the server.

In any event, I edited and put a thumbnail in my posting.

Hey jlangdale! Your pics are fine to embed especially since they are hosted on your own server. What I'd like to avoid is using K's or RSN's bandwidth to embed pics here. Sorry for the confusion.

Ski centers hoping for early openings

Ski centers hoping for early openings

saratogian.com said:
KILLINGTON, Vt. -- Encouraged by recent cold temperatures, some Northeast ski centers are gearing up for the possibility of early November openings.

Six inches of fresh snow fell on Killington Peak this week, with two inches at the base, spokeswoman Kim Jackson said.

Snowmaking crews need two or three days of consistently cold temperatures to get trails ready for skiing.

'We won't open unless we get top to bottom,' she said.

Last year, Killington opened on Oct. 25 and didn't close until May 26, thanks to one of the snowiest winters in recent history. In two previous years, the mountain didn't open until Nov. 6.

Killington's earliest opening on record was Oct. 1, 1993. But the resort was forced to temporarily close trails because of subsequent rain and warm temperatures.

'We're not doing that anymore,' Jackson said. She said the mountain won't open until officials are certain it can stay open for good.

Rime trail, off Killington Peak, is expected to be the first one to open, serviced by the K1 Express gondola. Temperature and humidity conditions at the base have to be right before around-the-clock snowmaking can take place.

'There's a whole bunch of factors that are involved,' Jackson said.

Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid is planning a Nov. 22 opening, Business Manager Doug Hart said.

'We've had just basically a dusting of snow,' he said. Last year, the mountain opened on Nov. 9 and continued operating through mid-April. Hart said Whiteface has continued with a program of upgrading its snowmaking and grooming equipment in preparation for the winter.

Okemo Mountain Resort in Ludlow, Vt., plans to start making snow on Halloween with a scheduled opening on Saturday, Nov. 8, spokeswoman Pam Cruickshank said.

'We'll have top to bottom on two to four trails with two lifts open,' she said. 'That's what we're hoping for right now.'

Cruickshank said Okemo, like most Northeast ski centers, had above average early-season conditions last year. Okemo opened on Nov. 2 in 2002.

'We're hoping we can have the same this year,' she said.

Okemo's trails are covered with one to four of inches fresh snow, she said. Erin Campos of the Vermont Ski Areas Association said trails at Smuggler's Notch are also blanketed after getting light snowfalls each of the past few nights.

Jack Hay of The Alpine Sport Shop in Saratoga Springs said skiers and snowboarders can do a number of things to get ready for the upcoming season. First, skis should be tuned and bindings checked. Also, young people should make sure they haven't outgrown boots and other equipment.

Perhaps most important, anyone planning to hit the slopes should do some type of light exercise to prevent injuries and make the ski experience as enjoyable as possible, he said.

Winter sports enthusiasts can learn about the latest new equipment and resort improvements at this year's Great New York State Snow & Travel Expo, scheduled for Nov. 7-9 at Empire State Plaza in Albany. A variety of exhibits, workshops and movies are planned.

Out of sheer and utter boredom, here is, the ultimate bump.. :-D

And add http://forums.alpinezone.com/73-wont-long-now.html for the fun of it.

Somehow, the tone between this post, 5 and 7 years ago, and the current posts should somehow be captured in the Killington challenge questions. I'm just not sure how it really could be worded in the form of a question.. But the excitement captured from this old thread vs last years threads is vastly different. I guess, the mountain used to be 'part of the community'.
