Kurt Cobain fit the bill perfectly for a leader of the Grunge movement. He was a depressed, druggie - which is pretty much the image of the entire grunge scene. Eddie Vedder was a bit too stable to be the real leader of that scene IMO. It was also a huge timing issue since they were the first ones with a major breakthrough hit and they played tons of radio-friendly songs. I still can listen to Nirvana, but I do agree that they were/are overplayed.

Another band that I somehow forgot to list - STP. They also fit the bill for a lead singer that was the epitome of grunge - Scott Weiland

timing is everything in life. Nirvana had the most perfect timing situation to make it big. The Replacements were Nirvana 10 years earlier. Westerberg played the whole what was to be called the "Cobain" thing for years before Kurt learned his barre chords. Cobain many times called Paul Westerberg his "hero". Cobain dressed (Flannel anyone?), acted, performed and gave interviews much like Paul. Kurt wrote Westerberg-type lyrics about Westerberg topics. Westerberg nailed the agitated twenty-something vibe in the early 1980s.
I find it sad how Rollingstone mag likes to use the term "Cobain-Westerberg vein" a lot when reviewing new cds but most people dont even know who the repacements were.
I found nothing new to Nirvana when they came out. I didnt have MTV and listened to WLIR/WDRE or WNEW so I wasnt getting fed hair bands and I played guitar and got lots of music mags in the mail each month so my musical landscape wasnt as bare as most people my age. I just thought Nirvana reminded me of early matts with some good production.
