Meteorological Winter.

Meteorological winter runs from December 1st - March 1st, so technically we are more than halfway done with winter, boy what a stinker :x it has been so far.

56F this morning at home when I left for work, on January 18th  Normal HIGH temp is 37F

No cold weather in sight for the next ten days, which is truly depressing.

I have to disagree here. The first three weeks of December were fantastic. Since about Christmas, well...not so much...

Ski Season this year started for some in Oct.
I plan on going into mid May.
Hopefully the end will be good for us. Depression due to the weather had been hard to avoid.

And let's not forget the great conditions at the end of October and Thanksgiving weekend.

Ummm . . . what are you people smoking?

A few inches in October and some cold temps for snowmaking in December and you say it hasn't been a stinker so far?

I'd take a Warm December and a Cold January over a Warm January and Cold December any day. I've watched the base at Gore deteriorate mightily in the past 2 weeks. Right now it is POURING here in Albany, and it's not cooling back down until February.

The season HAS been a stinker so far. February and March have to be unbelievably good to save it. If there's to be any hope of skiing until April and May, we need cold temps and SNOW to rebuild what's been lost.

I am not saying it was all bad, Thanksgiving was fantastic, but December has been all over the place with weather conditions.

Still, it's not good to have such warm weather in January, the coldest time of the year is nearly upon us and it is disgustingly warm.

I think this winter will hurt an already weakened ASC, the snowmaking budget must be strained. Sugarloaf is in awfull shape right now.

I think part of it may be your location.
My home region (the whites) have not had a good snow season. The southern mountains seem to have had some nice storms.

Alot of snow was made in DEC with the cold weather. Conditions do not hit that next level until there is some natural snow and minimal rain. We have not had alot of snow and quite a bit of rain.
The resorts are doing the best they can. I have seen complaining on other boards. The weather is the problem in most situations, not the resorts efforts. IMO
I still have 28 days out. Things could be worse.

I feel even more sorry for the smaller mountains.

Bigger Mountains have the budget to pour into snowmaking when the temps do drop down again. If it's President's Week and you want to bring the kids skiing, most people will choose a bigger mountain because the snowpack will be more reliable - increasing the financial strain on the smaller mountains.

I agree with you Bob 100% that the resorts are doing the best that they can with crappy weather. Even the skiing in P.A (banana belt) was amazingly good after this major thaw. But recovering costs big $$$$$$$$$

Yes I do agree that the smaller areas will be taking a hit with this weather, currently 3 out of 5 ski areas in Connecticut are closed today due to weather.

OK So the past 3 weeks have, to blatantly put it sucked.

But the season has by no means been a stinker. I've skied waist deep pow in Quebec, had more than a dozen "real" powder days in NH and ME and even though the snow isn't great right now, coverage isnt to bad. The woods are still skiable in the north.

It has not been a stinker... I've been skiing for over 4 months now!

So far this season I've logged 17 days of skiing. Of those 2-4 were crap, the rest good to exceptional. Yes the recent weather has hurt and if nature doesn't help it may take awhile to fully recover. But Mother Nature is a fickle lady, who's to say we won't have a surprise dump next week. Just call me an optimist.

As far as I can tell at least 4 of the 5 are closed. I'm not sure on Woodbury. I did see a report that had Sundown open today, but that is incorrect. Sundown was also closed this past Saturday. IIRC once we opened in mid to late December last year we stayed open until spring...

I feel sorry for people who actually think this has been a good season.

It's pretty obvious they've never really experienced a truly epic winter with endless powder that starts in october and lasts non-stop into may.

i guess that's what happens though when you've been stuck on the ice coast your entire life.

ignorance is bliss.

All things are relative. People can only compare conditions to those they have experienced. Not everyone is fortunate enough to get out west as often as some of us do.

Yet another friendly reminder: this is a forum dedicated to mainly Northeastern Skiing. This is what people expect to discuss here and what their interests are. It is assumed that these are yours as well.

If you don't like it, follow the Winnie-the-Pooh rule and if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Just to be clear here as well (because as of late some of my posts have been misconstrued... ). As a community, we respect differing points of view and I do not "censor" nor silence people. AlpineZone, and America for that matter, has always been about commonground, compromise, and differing views.

However, we do not condone people repeatedly causing conflict, consistently stating an unpopular opinion with the intent of creating an argument or belittling what the majority values.

We are fairly laid back in here and open minded and I hope we can keep it that way. It just takes everyone's cooperation to achieve this.

And read your PM's.

This is the "Northesast Guide to Mountain Adventure" - we're all aware of how great it is out west.. Painfuly aware...

It's a good season - not a great season or an epic season - just a good season...
