I guess that the foot of powder that I was skiing in at Killington on Thanksgiving weekend was a hallucination?

Seemed really good to me.

I don't think he said that the early season pow was a hallucination, I think he just said it would be nice to have a October-March with no significant temperature increases/rain events (paraphrase to protect the innocent).

I think it's too early to call the whole season a wash, but I will agree that it has sucked the past 3 weeks. All in all, has it been a good season? IMO No. UP TO THIS POINT, No it hasn't. I've skied about 20 days so far and had about 6-7 good days. 1 very good day. No "epic days". Usually, my epic days come later in the year though (February and March). So there is still hope.

I must have had the same drugs you did, I remember that hallucination.

Haven't skied out west yet, plan on it this year. However, it scares me a bit. For now I appreciate the East Coast skiing, I hope I still do after going out west.

I have been out 9 days so far, 5 of them were powder days in most spots. Even Skiing the mashed potato snow at Camelback was fun (besides the fog), it's not often that you get springtime skiing/weather in January.

Thanks to everyone here who has taken this thread onto a positive spin.

As for me, if the season were to end today, I'd be pretty happy. Isn't that what it's all about?

I feel sorry for people who actually think this has been a good season.

It's pretty obvious they've never really experienced a truly epic winter with endless powder that starts in october and lasts non-stop into may.

i guess that's what happens though when you've been stuck on the ice coast your entire life.

ignorance is bliss.

Wait, I don't get it. You want more yellow snow, and less Chemistry Class with the Lone Ranger?

I'm on the "So far it's sucked" side of things- only managed to get out 3 days so far. Granted, one was in October with great snow, so I can't really complain all that much, but still, it's only three days. I hope the weather turns around soon, though- I hate spending $200 to ski on mud. Not that I won't, I just don't like it.

lets see,
nice start to the season with 3 of the best october ski days of my life (had to skin for the turns, but well worth it with 40-50 inches the last week of the month)
12/2-12/22= 100"+ @ Jay, absolutly no crowds weekdays (and no big winds), and I was privlaged to ski everyone of those days except one.
post christmas= crap, with a couple decent days around the first weekend of jan, followed by major crap with a few terds mixed in.
right now this weather is depressing me big time, but looking back its been pretty good year for me all together. as I remember january last year was just about as bad, then feb and march were pretty sick, lets hope for the same.

even with a sick trip out west, you should still have respect/desire for the east if that is where your roots are. I went to school in colorado and had passes at vail resorts one year, winter park one year and steamboat the other two, and I skied a ton. my last year out there was bad ass, the boat got around 440" of pixy dust. I could have stayed out there, but their is just something about New England and its skiing that is awesome, and the longer I was out there the more I realized it. my first year back I was rewarded with the record breaking winter of 00-01 when jay recieved 570". Yes colorado is one of the weaker places out west to ski, but I have skied deeper pow at jay than I ever did out there. Not to say one coast is better than the other, but I think the east is still awesome, especially if you have the sense for adventure and the skill to follow through. definatly take trips out west, its a whole different world. I wish I was there right about now.

I've been out 13 times so far, all these are at Wawa unless otherwise noted...

11/25: Powder morning
11/26: 6" deep powder on trails sides
11/28: Wet packed snow
12/8: Eve of 17"
12/13: Loose Powder
12/16: Hard pack (freezing rain storm)
12/19: Loose Powder
12/28 (Mount Snow): Horrible, after rainstorm
1/3: 12" powder day
1/6: Loose Powder
1/10: Loose powder
1/13: Horrible, wet, warm
1/16 (Sunapee): Fresh packed powder

As you can see, Thanksgiving was good, 90% of December was good up to Christmas, the first week of January was good. Folks, we've only had 3 bad weeks since Thanksgiving. We still have nearly 15 left in the season. Sit tight. There's a major pattern change on the way for early February.

Nothing to be scared of at all. You can ski some pretty steep stuff out there that you would never try here. Get out to Utah, no ice, ever. They have every type of run you can think of. And it's huge, rarely crowded, long, long runs. Everyone should go there at least once a year if possible.

One man's "loose powder" is another man's frozen hardpack granular
