Ok so im at Winter Park today, 5inches of new pow by the way , anyway for those that have been there im in the timberline liftline, a 2seater lift that goes up to the bowl, this lift does not slow down however when it turns in the loading area. Anyway i hear the lift attendent start saying get back get back, the guy in front of me was not paying attention at all, was a little too far forward, and got blindsided by this lift, whole left side of his face was smashed up, and his legs got taken out from him at the same time, it was like watching a boxing fight. Ive seen alot of accidents and crazy thing happen but this was truly scary because i was next in line behind him. Just goes to show you really need to pay attention before getting on the lift instead of everyone wondering where everyone is going when we all get off the lift so we dont get tangled up. I know it got my attention for anytime im in a line in the future. Was truly scary.

In Austria my wife got hooked up to a Poma, tangled in her jacket, lifted her up and threw her into the wall. OUCH! I made the mistake of standing up once after falling off a lift. Smacked me in the head. This was when I was just starting out. Never forgot it though.

Those old and fast lifts can be dangerous. I popped right out of my binding on MC's Soujourner once.

The exit of the Freeway chair at Whiteface was a real attention getter. Steepest thing I have ever seen.

I was on that chair a few weeks ago. Basic fixed grip, nothing especially dangerous about it. Was there a liftie out there grabing?

My buddy got whacked off the ramp by one of the triples on the North Face at Mount Snow once. I forgot the name of the lift, but it's the one that runs up Free Fall. He was fine so it was more funny than anything else...

Most people are totally oblivious to the lift when they are getting ready to board. They're ussually too worried about where there buddy is, or what trail to ski next, or the guy behind them thats scratching up their top sheets, or some other crap. Those chairs are heavy and can really hurt when they're going full speed. You really need to pay attention. There should be a lifty next to the loading area to bump the chair, whatch for him/her, if they tell you to hold up or move back then do so!

Detachables require less attention, but it never hurts to be on your toes...

Northface

About 10 yrs ago at mount snow northface I saw this teenager get dragged under the chair the entire length of the boarding lift platform. It was REALLY ugly. The lift had to stop and they had to get paramedics in and they actually drove him out. Held up the lift 45 minutes on a really cold day super windy too. While it was bad for him everytime i skied down past the people stuck on the chair you could just see how much pain they were in being stuck on the chair with 30-45 mph winds and about 5-10 degrees out.

...that sounds like something to mention to the office. Just not right. The guys job is to watch our backs. You know....me, you, your wife, my kids, your best friend....

Maybe he should start at latrine cleaning duty, then dishes, then on up until he's willing to pay attention.

Sorry, but that really got my "pet peeve" valve steaming....

Can't tell you how many times we've seen lifites sleeping inside the lift shack at the top of Killington chairs...

I 've seen a few people go for a drag trying to load. but what really freaks me out is people falling off of a lift. I've seen that a few times. never a far fall but still freaky.
I took a ride with 2 ski patrol guys on the skye peak quad years ago and I pulled the bar up before we were over the net at the end and they ripped me a new one. they said they put that net up there because LOTS (they emphasized 'lots') of people fall out of that chair. I have a buddy who swears he's seen people in the net but I never have. that is a hell of a drop without that netting.

Tyrolean always yells at people who raise the bar before the net. Good to know patrollers thing the same way...

Same at Hunter this season.

Last season my 9 year old Peter slipped off the Quad at Hunter right at the boarding area. But the liftie was totally oblivious. My buddy Karl had Peter by one arm and I was yelling to stop the lift, but it never stopped. It took me from the loading area to the bottom of Racer's to sort everything out and get the safety bar down without nailing Karl's arm and thus losing Peter. Once that was done, Karl and I hauled him back onto the lift.

Wouldn't you know it, as soon as his butt hit the seat, the lift stopped!

King, I think you mean the Mt. run chair,. Freeway chair has a short mold pitch.
It's the chair that leads to the downhill run. The one with the plywood sides, ends at a rock then into the woods if you don't bang a right. I remember when I started skiing 10 years ago how hard it was to get off the lifts. That one would have killed me.

not exactly...

but similar. alll has to do with being alert...

I was on a quad at Stowe, this lady was totally wound up - blah, blah, blah, blah - I was thinking how I couldn't live with someone nonstop blabbing. Anyways, she was paying zero attention. Time to get off, she's not even looking ahead - blah, blah, blah. She has her tips crossed, stands up, is immediately driven to her knees, left ski pointing right and right ski pointing left. Immediately behind, the chair continues to hit her in the butt and knock her straight forward to a face plant. About 5 seconds all this happens. Liftie was alert, shuts down the lift. had to pop the bindings to get her legs straight!

She walked away, but probably pulled a few muscles. Pay attention, dummy!

that doesn't happen to me... I just FALL OFF the chairs!

Jackass Lift

A couple of years ago I was at Silver Mountain in Idaho. It was about this time of year and the mountain was almost empty midweek. It was pretty warm and the snow was on the slushy side

As the day went on I skied over to a remote section of the mountain serviced by an ancient double chairlift. The snow was great over there and tehre was no one anywhere I could see. I got to the base and the old timer running the lift yells welcome to the jackass lift. I said thanks and How you doin he says great and tells me to be careful and get way right when I load. I step what I think is far enough right and then I get smacked in the ass by the center pole of the smallest double chair I've ever been on. I struggle upright and get my cheeks on the seat and cling onto the center pole. As I'm going up I hear the old time yelling "Thats why we call it the Jack Ass lift, while laughing his butt off."

I lapped that lift for a few runs after I figured it out and had a few more laughs with the old SOB.
