Resort or Ski Area: Haystack

Conditions: PURE POWDER

Trip Report:
After the excellent conditions at Mt Snow on Friday (see Billski's report), I figured old Haystack should have some goods. Caught an early lift on Saturday & skinned over the ridge trail. Pure powder lay at least 15" deep aling the ridgeline. Fortunately, someone had gone thru on snowshoes recently so I did not have to contend with trail breaking. Other than the snowshoe track which continued on, tne only sign of passage at the 'stack was an old pair of ski tracks and what looked to be a toboggan run, presumably from before the snowfall of Wednesday. Skiing was bliss - the kind of powder you just float to the surface on and brings a stupid grin to your face. All was well until 1 pm when the temps warmed up. As with all good things, the pleasure is only enhanced by the pain. In this case, my skins kept balling up in the wet powder, which made the return to Mt Snow twice as long as the trip in. But all in all, an exceptional day - we'll miss you, Haystack!

I thought that it was a private ski club? So I take it they mothballed the place for this season and will run it next year?

there are huge plans for haystack as a private resort. the plan all along was not to operate this season. there is a lot of information about the sale and current opeartion over on the NELSAP forum. they just imported one of the former big wigs that ran mount snow actually

way to get at it! closed ski areas are some of the most amazing powder stashes in the world. though i gotta wonder why you didn't park at the haystack lot instead of having to hike back over to snow?

Yeh... I kind of wondered that too, after the fact! Doh! Probably would have saved some wear & tear on my bindings... the warm snow kept clumping up on the return, & I fell over at one point, torquing the toe piece & pulling a screw.

Haystack is a dead a Julius Cesaer. Have gone by it every day for two weeks on the way to Carinthia. Glad to see somebody get some use out of it.

new president

My former boss at the Bush, Dave Dillon, was recently named President of the Haystack Club. He went from the Bush to VSAA. He is kinda hard to describe, very diferent, he is more comfortable standing in manure tending his horses but does pretty well in the boardroom as well, so here is a link about it. Five years from now what will Haystack be like?
