Heli-Skiing

Have you guys ever been Heli-skiing or boarding by the way? It heard that it was pretty tight cuz they straight drop you into the mountain. The reason why i asked was because I just entered this contest through Nissan that my friend from Nissan told me about. I guess they are giving away adventure trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Salmon River Calfornia to promote the newly designed 2005 Xterra - which btw is very nice actually. Anyways I entered the contest and I hope I win because I would love to ski in Valdez, Alaska. Check it ouyt and enter: newx.com

One post, talking about the new Nissan Pathfinder.

I will put the topic on target here. Who really has been Heliskiing? When I was in Alta (twice) I was wicked jealous of those guys going up in the helicopters. Wicked expensive though, I think it was something like $700 per person for 7 runs - OUCH!. Anyway, I found this blog online about Heli Skiing recently, thought it was pretty cool:

"Landing on a snowy ridge, you peer down on a glacier carved bowl rimmed with stunning scenery. The helicopter lifts off. Immersed in white silence, you realize how few people ever experience such an exquisite blend of beauty, solitude and sport.

Adrenaline, sensory stimulation and the fluidity of motion create indescribable exhilaration. You feel as though you're floating through a cloud of snow. Each successive turn adds to your excitement and satisfaction."

I definately need to do it someday, someday when I have money. I think I have the ability. :)

I went heli-skiing in December of 1993 when I took a trip to Whistler/Blackomb
with my skiing friend. It was $100 Canadian per run per person at that time and we took six runs all together. The weather was fairly sunny for the whole time and there was about 2-3' of powder with a covering on top of the snow with something the guide called hoar frost. Apparently this covering develops when the cold temperatures leach out extra moisture from the snowpack???

At the start of every run the guide had to do a avalance test by digging into the snowpack and looking at the layers of snow. It's really an odd feeling to have the helicopter leave you high on a mountain peak. We also had to do some training with tranciever beacons, the company buried them in the snow of the parking lot at the helicopter base and we had to find them before they would let us go heli-skiing.

Must've been a very low budget heli operation...who would pay $300 for a heli trip to terrain you can access by hiking from inbounds?

The heliskiing operation I took advantage of in Portillo brought us to 14,000 foot peaks that were accessible only via helicopter UNLESS you were into an arduous 2 day backcountry trip that would have involved an overnight.

I would have been pissed, but not at you for skinning out there.

Never been...

I've not been but it sure seems like a lot of fun. However, it really does require some extra training. I wouldn't attempt it myself until I had training in back country skiing. I have a little avalanche training but would need much more just in case.

When I was in Whistler the trips were only $75 Candian. I guess they lowered the prices!

There are a few resorts in Idaho and other remote places where they heli you into the place you're staying and heli you to a new peak every day. Supposed to be a blast. If I ever get the training I'd love to do this.

Blue River Creek, BC. Mike Wiegles Hele-camp, 7 days of the most incredable skiing I ever had. It was many years ago but I remamber it like it was yesterday. It was a trip of a life time.

Not at all - Intermediate skiers go heli skiing all the time.. In fact when we were in BC a couple years ago they only HAD intermediate terrain available due to avi danger... We blew it off... Cause we all have 30+ days a year... ;)

They give you a transceiver and run you through it - give some safety instruction and send you on your way...

You have guides... It's not like you have to go by yourself... :)

When I went heli-skiing with my friend, he had only been skiing for a year and was only a strong intermediate skier at the time. Our guide took us to terrain that was suited for his ability level. My friend only had a hard time with the deep snow even though he was skiing on powder boards. We even did some glacier skiing on the Rhine glacier which had a really nice mellow even pitch.
