Resort or Ski Area: Hidden Valley, Vernon, NJ

Conditions: Powder

Trip Report:

My son and I were originally going to go the Mt. Peter today. But my wife, who was going to sit in the lodge with our infant daughter, was nervous about how the roads were going to be later so she convinced my son to go the HV instead because it's closer.

Anyway that turned out to be a good decision, the roads were fine when we left but the higher elevation of HV made for great conditions. It basically dumped snow the whole time we were there. We got there at 8:45 and left about 1:30. During this time 6" fell.

I basically let my son tell me what trails he wants to ski, he'll be 7 years on Friday and has been skiing since he was 2 so he can ski the whole mountain. We started out with a run down Browse Along, the longest trail at the mountain, a blue cruiser. Next Upper and Lower Breakneck then Upper and Lower Highland Swing. Then he wanted to do Chicken Delight, the one beginner trail at HV, with not much pitch it was hard to get going until we hit the slightly more pitched part of the trail (they ended up grooming this trail before I left, presumably because it was hard for the beginners). Then back to the triple chair for Upper and Lower Highland Swing again. My son went into the lodge and I did three runs alone from the summit one of which was down Kurly Kue, one of the steepest trails on the mountain. This one was a lot of fun, huge mounds of powder all over the trail that you could blast through. BTW last night I looked at Lower Helenbeck from the bottom but never hit it, it was completely bumped up and still was today.

Took a lunch break and then me and my boy went out for 3 more runs, Browse Along again followed by Kurly Kue twice. I got lots of fresh tracks, it was the rare powder day in Jersey and the area was just starting to get crowded (relatively) when we were leaving. My son and I both had a great time. Here are a couple of pictures from the lodge right before lunch, sorry about the poor quality, I took them with my cell phone.

In the mid-70s I learned to ski at HV (except for my very first time on skis, on the rope tow at Vernon Valley) and would love to hit a powder day (or night) there sometime.
