How much extra weight does all your gear add?

This thought came to me tonight. I have been losing weight and got on the scale to see my progress. Then it occurred to me that my gear - skis, bindings, poles, boots, ski pants, jacket, helmet, etc. must weigh a lot so tomorrow I will put everything on and hold my skis to see just how much it weighs!

How much does your gear weigh?

That can depend on a couple of different factors. On mountain it's probably around 15 lbs of extra weight. Back country it can get a bit absurd. On a long treck that weight can shoot upwards of 30 lbs, even with be conscientious of trying to go light. Bigger fatter skis, backpack, layers, food, avi gear, water and obviously beer. It starts to add up. Obviously the more food, water and beer you consume the lighter your pack becomes.

I buy skis un mounted and bindings separately. It's a big surprise (to me) how much weight the bindings added. That said, I know of two bindings on the market that list their weight, sally's Z12-Z14 and Marker's Jesters. I got the former on a sweet deal and can feel the difference.

In terms of boots, I go for fit and functionality. Weight is near dead last so I deal with it.

Unfortunately 15lbs is a WAY low estimate. Ballpark weights of Alpine gear (obviously there are huge variations):

Boots: ~2,000g = ~4.5lbs ea = 9lbs pair. (some boot weights listed http://www.evo.com/ski-boot-weight-chart-for-alpine-backcountry-ski-boots.aspx)
Skis: ~2,000g = ~4.5lbs ea = 9lbs pair. (http://www.evo.com/ski-weight-chart-for-alpine-backcountry-skis.aspx
Bindings: ~1,200 = ~2.5lbs ea = 5lbs pair. (http://www.evo.com/ski-binding-weight-chart-for-alpine-backcountry-bindings.aspx)

So you're up to 20-25lbs before you even put on pants, jacket, gloves, helmet, goggles, poles, etc. Easily another 15-20 lbs worth of stuff there depending how warm you're dressing.

I would agree with Cannonball that we are all carrying a lot more extra weight than we realize on a ski day. Thank goodness for gravity:p
I have a pair of approx ten year old Volant V2 Chubb Genesis skis, 175cms/94mm, that I still use (including last season) when I get to ski new snow or lots of packed powder. They are heavy metal and I really feel it after a day out west riding chairs with no foot rests. I weighed them once at my house, they are 19.5 lbs with bindings.
Here with youngest daughter at Kirkwood (terrific ski area) in 2013:
volant kirkwood suzy.jpg

So with skis, bindings, helmet, googles, water bottle, snacks, camera, keys, wallet, ski boots, poles, and tons of layers of clothing on a cold day I bet we are packing 30-40 extra pounds. :daffy:

I picked up some new Nordica Vagabonds 177cm/107mm this summer that will largely supplant the Chubbs. They are lighter than the Chubbs, but not too much because they have so much more surface area.

I think of it this way.

How much weight do I add to my equipment? I need to lose some.

Does it really matter? Downhill no big deal ....I don't have trouble shleping equipment from the parking lot to the lift.
My equipment is 23lbs . I dont have any problem transitioning from turn to turn quickly . Heavy is stable at higher speeds.

BC another story , my boots weigh 5lbs apice ...And I need to find something lighter.
I just don't trust tech bindings in no fall zones.
Marker dukes are bullet proof but I pay a price for the weight on the way up. skis could be lighter also.

For every few ounces of whiskey I consume I can drop a layer of clothing....

The more hard liquor you drink, the less weight you have to carry. In the coldest of cold temps to begin I start by slamming a 750 of Jack down and am fully geared weighing in at 215lbs. I shed about 7 pounds worth of clothing (including helmet, gloves, jacket, pants, and all Under Armour) by the time I get to the lift. This generally leads to also losing a ski or both the first 500' of a trail so subtract 10-12 pounds. Finally after severely dehydrating myself and spewing all food from my system (about half way down) I drop another 4-5 lbs. If all goes well I'm on the floor of the tavern in boxers and boots after one run weighing around 192 lbs, a few pounds less than when I woke up that morning.

Variables factor big time here. You're clothing weighs less than you think. Also I'm 5'7". I ski small fischers. I'll weigh them out but they certainly don't weigh as much as your ballpark figures.

Race siis aee jot heavier becaus e heavy skis ski better. They are heavier becauee they have way more materials in them to make them stiff. All the dense woods and metal add up fast.

Well got on the scale and did a before and after weighing. My gear including a pack is about 38 lbs. I do not ski with a pack often unless we plan on staying out most of the day - then my pack would include beverages.
