Look, you want to drive someone insane...stick them in Buffalo with no way out. When it gets covered with 10 feeet of snow, the only place to ski will be golf courses. I think Buffalo should set up an export business for snow. It's just wasted there.

King,
I lived, worked and skied in Buffalo winter of 79 and 80. There are three little pimples south of B. that get it all. Like sometimes 24 inches overnight. It's amazing stuff on a 400 to 500' vertical Peak and Peak, Holiday Valley and one other, I don't recall the name. You have to use your imagination - close your eyes (er, maybe not) and think rockies. It is some of the finest snow imaginable.
The highway dept. does a great job keeping they roads clear- no wimps on that force. The real issue is "blowing and drifting snow" which can keep you away. On really bad days, my father would wait in the driveway for a snowplow, then pull out and follow the fellow (separated sufficiently from his "wake")

The "other place" you're probably thinking about is Kissing Bridge. Also south of Buffalo, right in the snow belts. There were times when there was so much untracked powder that the only way to ski was straight down the fall line. If you made a turn, you stopped. It kind of took fun out of the whole affair. Yeah, the slope pitch was marginal over there.
Holiday Valley was great though. The hill is like a body of huge whale. The ride along the "spine" was long and shallow, but the sides were actually fairly steep. Short, but steep and full of great moguls.

I went to University of Buffalo and their ski club (Shussmeisters) was an awesome deal, for as long as you liked night skiing. Add all that powder and it was Cheap and Deep. I loved it! I really miss those huge snow dupms.

KB, that's right. Got pretty cold at night too and the lifts were sloooooow..... Now you've got me going......Oh, I remember those were the softest moguls I ever remember. When you would fall, you would get lost in the snow. It would just snow and snow, but they couldn't bring the grooming equipment out - what a great problem to have! What years were you at UB? I see we're in the same geo sphere now.

I was at UB from '73 - '81, undergrad through to grad school.
Lots and lots of good snow memories. You really have to live in a place like Buffalo to have a visceral understanding of the word "blizzard".

Right now I wouldn't mind 500 vert of powder. Better than the 2 inches of 70 degree rain we are getting now.
