Great day at Hunter. Blue skies, sunny, and a run in with some bears on Hellgate. Started off icy but quickly warmed up. ike still has the b course setup and Racers had some good bumps left as well as The Cliff . Run of the day was Cliff to Racers. Upper xover is still good with a tight field and lower K still is huge!!. Clairs opened very late and I was shot by then after 5 hours straight. Everything is holding up well and should last to closing barring any super warm weather. As I posted in the reg section I had a cool but too close run in with some bears, Coming down Hellgate I came across a mother and 2 cubs. Fortunately people screamed for me to stop in time or i would have gotten way too close. As it was I was about 50 feet away...they can run fast. One old guy wouldn't stop and skied right past them. they hung out in upper xover for a while them wandered off.

Wow. That is remarkable. What a sight. Never seen anything like that with so many people around.

We skied at Loon last Friday and were remarking on the bear claw prints in the beech trees. The only time I ever saw a bear in the woods it was of it's rear end and speeding away from us.

That mother and her cubs has lived off Crossover for years. She has a new set every 2 years.

That sounds even worse. Have there ever been any "incidents"?

Nope... Unless you count garbage being assaulted... We can't leave our trash out at night... they come down... Take the trash... drag it into the yard and tear into it...

We got bears all over the mountain... Lot of them...

It's easy to stay away from them... You can hear them and actually smell them...
If you come up on a mother and cubs... the cubs scramble up a tree and the mom postures..

Last year a mountain Jam they were ransacking tents.. I saw a bear cruise into the woods with a watermellon in it's mouth..

BEars are cool... it's GREAT to have them around...

It's good for mountain men like you who know how to act and treat them. What concerns me are all the city-folk flatlander-type who are unfamiliar with wild animals, and have only seen them in the zoo.

When I used to live in the north country, vacationers would go to the dump a night and try to feed them. Results in major auto damage and other stupid incidents including wildlife abuse.
