Hunter/Plattekill..and Glen Plake 3/11,12-2012

I was going to take the loooong bust trip to K Sunday but opted for my probably only day this season at Platt. I got there at 10 after picking up a flex tix from Pott Bros. Spent the day running around with ski patrol, yanking hoses down the hill from the snow guns...and skiing. Blockbuster was the run of the day and we spent most of the time there..getting there we encountered that glue snow that devolops in the spring..the double ejection kind, so I just got the powder boards in the afternoon. Did a mountain sweep at closing and watched a chair evac drill..which I once actualy took part in at Hunter.
Back to my friends house..drank too much...and went to Hunter.

Woke up to warm temps so only 1 layer was needed..got there around 9ish with Vince and a ski patrolller from Platt..also met a ski instructor there..so we had a good batch...we would meet many interesting people that day..even saw what looked like Glen Plake, and I heard that it was, thisa is unconfirmed but I heard he was taking the level 3 PSIA test, which is plausible. Everything was open and in very good shape. They have a hell of a base there with only small patches getting thin..but not for long as it was VERY warm today and rain is on the way. Skied the moguls with the instructor giving me tons of invaluable advice. I am going to hire him from time to time next season to get me up a few notches..my run down K-27 confirmed that I need this.
Ended the day poorly however with a really bad crash. Coming down Clairs building up speed to make it up the way to the chair..I caaught an edge and went flying..far. When I landed all the wind got knocked out of me and I was sliding very fast towards the edge of the trail..heading for rocks. Somehow I managed to get my feet below me and come to a stop..feet from the rock pile..but barely breathing. the troupe was soon around me as I sat up, nothing broken, everything moves, call off patrol as 2 of them are patrol from Platt. Too banged up to continue so we took a break, I bought the beers, met an ex pro skier in a most outrageouse outfit from the 80's. They continued on with him, turns out he can really rip them up...so with 2 Aleve's in me I'm chilling out...Alta awaits the 23rd so I might not ski next week...

and yes..that was Glen Plake I saw at the top of Xover..and I believe his wife by the lodge..

Sorry to hear about your spill, glad you're alright. Aleve is my ski season drug as well.

Pretty cool Glen was there, I saw him last season at Jiminy Peak of all places. I grew up hearing about this guy and his funky skiing. To actually see it in person was a treat. I hear his wife is a babe.

I think she was a "PowderGirl" one month a year or so ago in Powder Mag. I saw him and Scott Schmidt and crew years ago...It was in '92 or '93 at Vail. We got up close and watched as they were filming those guys doing crazy jumps over a cornice at the top of one of the back bowls. He is really cool.

Who was the Hunter instructor?

Hope you are feeling better - that runout to the lift is causing a lot if issues. Hopefully they are regrading this summer.

George..amazing skier..very smooth...I didn't know he was an instructor so I joked "lets do a warmup on lower k" ok lets go he smiles..hmm...maybe later.
This was one of my worst crashes as it knocked me almost out...I got lucky. Thank god I'm not fragile or I think I would have busted a rib or two.

Great reports, glad you made it to Platty Sunday, before all this sun does them in. Why didn't Glen want to ski Platty, to local for him lol.

Of course they passes.

Let's just pray that the others that deserved to pass and were just as good as also passed.

When he took Level 1, his wedge and wedge cristies were a 4 of 6 if I recall. (Need a minimum of 4 to pass.)

It is cool that he was in Hunter. Too bad, he did not spend some time with the freestyle kids clinics.

I can't even visualize Plake demoing a wedge turn. I don't even associate wedge with Plake.

Not trying to say he can't, just a weird thing to think about.
