I am just messing with you man. Hunter is a very tough place to ski due to the amount of people on the trail. Before I moved to NH Hunter was one of the places I skiied while living on Long Island.

This weekend was crowded.. Probably the most crowded weekend of the year...
But only on the liftlines... Hunter is 100% open right now so trails arent that crowded at all...

This happened near the bottom of Claires..

But I self medicated my way through the gig...
Truned out to be an incredible jam!

You should have just straight lined the hill. ,On Saturdays and Sundays, when it's crowded, I use the theory of relativity to my advantage. The fast I go, the more stationary everyone else appears. Yesterday on Perry Merril it was wicked crowded....people n snow plough mode weaving here and there...I find that if you just point it and aim for openings it's way safer then trying to slow down behid someone and wait for an opening to pass. Sort of like moving gates. ;)

DMC,

Something sounds strange about your description of the events that transpired. If you passed him completely and were going at a greater velocity than him, how could he then turn out of the fall line and hit you?

Honestly, it sounds like you're at fault. The uphill skier or snowboarder, prior to passing, must anticipate ANY type of turn the downhill skier might make.

Self medication is always the way to go. :) Happy to hear that you were still able to jam that night!

I passed him and was past him - he must've built up speed... Thats why it was so strange to me too...
I tend to ride trees and chutes with my back to the wall/trees so I can see clearly into the the piste - so he was not in my sight until he traversed into me...

He came in from an angle behind me... I was not the the uphill skier until I hit him...

I was willing to call it a grey area....

It's interesting how, when a collision occurs, everyone goes back to the responsibility code and tries to pick the incident apart...

This is like a situation that I've seen at least a few times while driving; if a driver cuts someone off and then gets rear-ended, officially it's the guy in the back's fault, but IMO the driver in front has to share at least some of the blame.

dmc, glad to hear that no one was seriously hurt. Stay in your "happy place"...

My happy place is out of beer - need to restock.... :)

I hit a car a few years ago during a snow storm... I was in the right lane going at a slow steady pace and this guy in an Acura screams up next to me then tries to get in front of me - going WAAAY too fast... He hit the snow pile between lanes and started 360ing in front of me.... I applied the brakes and kept a steady line... It was either that or hit the gaurd rail of traffic in the other lanes...

I plowed right into him... There were pleanty of wittnesses....
His insurance paid the entire claim...

It does sound like a gray area. Sorry for assuming you were at fault. Ideally, less skilled skiers would stay away from double diamonds like Clair's. Usually the only time I have a near-collision is if I've built up speed to get air off a jump and I'm too stubborn (and foolish) to slow down when a slow skier suddenly appears in the picture.

By the way, how were the conditions on the West side? Might go tomorrow.

dmc - keep posting. There's nothing wrong with this post in any way. Crazy things can happen on the slopes, and public discussion about how to handle it is a good thing.

i know this is an easy position to take, but i'd wager most expert level skiers did this at one time or another. i remember i had similar thoughts when i was a youngster of say 10-12 years of age. not that i condone this practice, it's bad for the snow cover to have people sidesliping the entire way down the hill. but people gotta have their piece of the fun and today's snowplower is tomorrow's expert that will be wiping our butts off the hill when we're in our 50s.

back on topic, sounds like neither party was at fault in the collision. despite his poor choice of words, beswift has a point to expect the unexpected. if you're going past someone that is of suspect ability and taking up a little too much trail, you either gotta blow by them giving them a wide bereth or preferably (from my point of view) pull over and wait for the hazard to pass, then wait for an open space to go. easy for me to say as i don't ski crowded areas, but i think i noted in a previous thread on a very similar topic i am most uncomfortable when skiers are paralleling me.

Get a life, dingaling. The author of this message blind-sided someone else by his own admission. It's too bad these things happen, but they don't happen to me. I wonder why since I have so much skiing experience. (Of course I'm not as impressive at these sports as you peope think you are.) However, the reason I have so much experience would be because I have avoided these kinds of incidents. I recognize the clowns like you who are accidents waiting to happen, then I avoid them like the plague. That's my message (and thanks for eating that bowl of Cheerio's I left out in the pig stye).

The point you guys are missing would be that if you are an expert skier, you avoid collisions with the less fortunate or gifted. When was the last time you heard about a ski patroller hiting a skier on the slopes? So please, wake up and die right.
