And that smell sets in after you head home, right? ;-) I think the dingiest lodge I have been in was Mt. Southington.

I'm wondering why you ask. Are you bringing a landlubber?

I only read in the lodge once. At Bretton Woods. We got there, it was dumping snow and by the time we booted up it turned to pouring rain everywhere on the Mt. We bought the sunday newspaper, a good drink and read it front to back waiting for the change-back, which never came.

But seriously, The only suggestion I would have is to look for a resort with an on-slope hotel, such as Sugarbush, which is steps away from the lodge and lifts. The Sugarbush hotel has a couple of nice lobbies where you can curl up and read, and be within striking distance of a good cup of coffee or a meal. The Toll House lodge at Stowe fits the bill too, though you wouldn't be within striking distance of skiers unless they came down toll road.

This is an interesting topic....I'd rather be skiing...

Me too. However, if you ever get the chance, one of the best would be in the Stratton Mountain Club's great room. Its gorgeous.

If a member ever invites you, go! I am not sure its worth all the money they pay (it is still Stratton, after all) but it definately is a different, pleasurable way to experience the mountain.

I could have used this 2 years ago when I tore my ACL and spent the winter in the lodges tearing through books while my friends skied the day away. I could have stayed home, sure, but being there was better than sitting at home, and an apres drink with folks who went was still a worthwhile time.

Now, not so much.

And FWIW my alma mater has its own ski area...with a small library in the Lodge for the race team members to do homework in between training runs. (Middlebury College and the Middlebury Snow Bowl).

Some of the rankiest/Worst lodges are

the ones with concrete floors, significant moisture I nominate worst lodge

1. Cannon Mtn State Run with Ambiance of None
2. Lodge at the base of Lions Head Pinkam Notch Resident laughs at the desperados
seeking nourishment, sustinence
3. Sunapee cause they charge 6.50 for a bowl of Chili

That definitely is a winner! LOL!

Mount Snow's lodge is decent, especially around the double fireplaces.

The best place if you want to read while someone is on the hill at Mount Snow, is go over to the Grand Summit Hotel, and in the hallways adjacent to the ski shop, all the way down to and including the main lobby there are many, really comfy couches to sit in and enjoy the relative piece and quiet, especially compared to the main base lodge.

In the main base lodge at Mount Snow, the fire place area is nice, but what's also a great place is climb the stairs that are adjacent to the cafeteria cash registers upto the 3rd floor, and unless it's a busy day the tables and chairs there are usually empty and the view is pretty good to. Plus, if you're there long enough you might even be able to put a face to some of the Mount Snow employees that post here as that's where many of their offices are!

Our daughter had the same idea. She's 2.5 and when I was hanging out in the lodge while Brian skied with 2knees recently, she darted off up to the stairs to the offices on the 3rd floor... and refused to come back down on her own. It was totally empty on the 2nd and 3rd floors with nice views. Quiet and all, but I preferred the fires on the 1st floor.

There is a food place accompanied by a good size fireplace right above the marketing department at Cannon. Its at the bottom of the mountain next to the main lodge where the ticketing area is.
