So now AZ is into gay-bashing?
Please make this go away, someone.

Second this

When you write "EPIC is gay" with the intent of putting EPIC down, you use the word gay as an insult.

Now if you don't think doing that is bashing, then you haven't been thinking too hard about what it is you're really doing when you say "That's gay" when you mean "I don't like that".

I'm a huge supporter of gays rights. Maybe you missed it, but against my better judgment as a moderator and being well aware of the no politics rule on AZ, I posted a thinly veiled celebratory thread voicing my happiness when NY approved gay marriage. Numerous members called me on it, I publicly apologized and deleted the thread. I don't take kindly to gay bigotry.

I don't think any of my numerous gay friends would take marcski's comments as malicious gay bashing. His comment calling epicski gay hints at a stereotype of some gay people (hyper-sensitivity), but it's pretty lighthearted. I view it kind of like how I'm sometimes the brunt of a joke on the internet concerning deadheads. Trust me, I'm not some jobless, dreadlocked hippie who took too much acid and is posting from my mom's basement drinking organic green tea surrounded by candles and incense. But some deadheads certainly do fit that stereotype. ;)

If you guys think I am gay bashing you haven't been around these parts too long.
It is not about who you are or what reputation you have. It is about what you said. And what you said is offensive because, as was already stated, you used the term "gay" as an insult. My son's friends do this all the time. Drives me crazy. But they are in Junior High School. Are you?

Holy Political Correctness gone overboard, Batman!

I'll echo DHS... HUGE supporter of individual rights and have gay friends... saying something is "gay" isn't gay bashing or whatever (unless meant as a slur or derogatory). Words have multiple meanings. In this case, read it is "lame" and get over yourselves.

I've taught high school for years, and am now teaching college classes. I have gay students just as I have heterosexual students in my classes. My gay students suffer when this "light hearted" comment ("that's so gay" - meaning that's bad) is said with no consequences. It's quite common to hear students say this.

It's my job, and that of other decent students in the class, to put an end to the acceptance of this phrase and others like it. It maintains the status quo of homophobia, and does significant harm. Same thing goes for this forum, and others too. Step up, people.

It needs to stop.

So I think I'm going skiing this weekend....

Thank you both. I'm a pretty reasonable person and I was caught totally off by the turn of this conversation and thought it was just me :dontknow:

I appreciate the education. But wow. Guess I'm not as tuned in to the sensitivity of the new age as I should be.

Wow... this has turned into late summer type testiness, not winter. We need some more snow and open areas.

Yes, some or many might find the comment offensive. Was it intended to be, probably not. Is the world sometimes an insensitive and or offensive place- yes. Is AZ part of this world, yes. The issue was identified, which is good, and hopefully will open some eyes and make AZ a slightly less offensive or insenstive place going forward. Next topic....

The term "gay" for a homosexual person came into our lexicon as a euphemism for for acts/personality traits/lifestyle that were "unmentionable" in "polite society". Eventually the word was embraced by the very community being spoken of.

Nowadays every suburban soccer mom and skiing internet poster has gay friends, or at least acquaintances. So if ignorant vulgarians with a limited vocabulary want to reclaim the word as their own, let em have it.

This site has become rather effete, has it not? :flame:

I work for a company and one of our clients deals with handicapped folks. Without divulging anything, their name of their company includes the letter H for Handicapped. They decided recently that wasn't acceptable anymore and now their name is just an acronym that isn't supposed to actually stand for anything anymore.

PC Garbage

Since "Gay" is a slang in itself because homosexual men in the 20's thought the word "homosexual" sounded too clinical, how does a group of people become the owners of the word? The word "gay" was used as slang long before that for other uses. In fact, in a sexual sense, the slang of "gay" meant a woman who was a prostitute or a man who slept with a lot of women before the homosexual community laid claims to it. Why? Probably because of the true meanings of "happy" and "excited". Why did the homosexual community choose it? Probably for both of those reasons and also because it was used as a slang to mean "splendid" and "showily dressed" in addition to the original meanings.

So.. here we are. A person can say "yippie skippy" or many other terms in a sarcastic way but can't use "gay" because someone told us they claimed the slang. Notice I said slang because it is already a slang and NOT the true meaning of the word. Sorry, but the OP did NOT say "those sites are homosexual". He used gay as a term to mean lame by the same standard as if he said "those sites are fantastic (with the eye roll icon)".

I am sorry for my rant. I have no problem with the homosexual community and have several friends who are "gay". I will stick up for them all day long but this PC crud has to stop. If it doesn't I am going to start a movement to call all IT guys "crappy's" so I never have to hear you say "the conditions are crappy today".. If you do, I will say it is derogatory towards us IT guys. =)
