Snowboarding is tough to learn but easy to get good at..
Skiing is easy to learn by tough to get good at...

This is what I've always heard. Since I've never tried snowboarding I don't know personally but I've heard this from many people & believe it to be true.

It's mainly due to balance...
Easy to balance with separate legs and poles... It's the reason snowboarders are forced to sit all the time... Contrary to the popular belief...

After 20 years of skiing I switched to snowboarding last year. I was pretty much bored with skiing. At this point I don't think I'll ever go back to skiing.

My philosophy on the issue is that it's personal preference. I've been told that snowboarders can't do moguls, destroy groomed trails, are a general disgrace to winter sports, and my favorite "snowboarders don't have any fun". I disagree. I have a blast every day, I love moguls, and if I'm "destroying a groomed run" something is really wrong with me.

On the most basic levels i believe boarding is easier than skiing but it's entirely different. Each day brings new challenges and I look forward to that.

Thank God

Well at least here I'm not as outnumbered as over on snowjournal. Over the past few years I have realized that as a snowboarder there are two distinct skiers, those who will ask you about your board and are nice to snowboarders realizing that boarders are why many resorts are making vast improvements, and then there is the other skier. This other skier I speak of is a snob who thinks that all riders are stupid teens acting like they're black who listen to rap. This skier often is either older and goes about 75 mph no matter what or they have a mini skier with them and come into the terrain park, past the group waiting to go, a very safe practice, and just straight off the jump, or over rather. Those are the guys I chase down, still in control and give a big fuck you to.:flame:

My thoughts on snowboarding

I have an issue with testosterone-ladden 17-year-olds. It doesn't matter what they have on their feet.

I think snowboarding is more appropriate in the west where you're on natural snow rathern than eastern hardpack. They're also more appropriate for mountains with much snow and little traffic to keep bumps from forming. If I were at a place like Mount Baker, I'd probably be on a snowboard.

Novice snowboarders tend to get over their heads and sideslip steep natural snow terrain ruining it for everybody else. Novice skiers are more self-limiting and you see far fewer of them in those places. Some of that is the testosterone-ladden 17-year-old thing.

Boarder chicks in the spring are nice to look at.

I think short shaped skis are worse than snowboards at trashing mogul fields. I also think that low skill skiers traversing in mogul fields do more damage than snowboards.

Snowboarders are great for breaking up the crust in the woods.

The overall skill level of snowboarders has inproved significantly over the last decade.

I have no trouble reading where a skier is going to turn based on body motion. I don't have a clue with snowboarders.

Many snowboarders have no sense of etiquitte on the hill. They hit people and don't bother stopping. They sit down in the middle of everything in large clumps like Canadian Geese on my lawn in the fall. They often ignore anyone who might be on their blind side when they make a turn in that direction. There are skiers who are just as bad but I think there are less of them.

Geoff,

I agree with you on most points...as a 30 year old snowboarder I tend to take things a bit differently than your average 17 year old. Unfortunately I get lumped in the same category, but I'm OK with that because I prove myself while boarding. I do stop to pick up a popped ski, goggles or whatever. If I do cut someone off, I apologize. Life it too short to spend it pissed off. I'm out to have a good time and enjoy myself.

I have to join in the chorus singing "snowboarding is overrated". Reason:

Boarding is just sliding on one plank instead of two. So it's the equivalent of skiing. By making it sound like more than that, is indeed overrating it. So yes, boarders tend to overrate boarding. Most skiers just ski, without regard to whether they're "cool" or not. Hence, not overrating nor underrating skiing.

I tried boarding and found it quite fun. I also found it quite easy too. So yes, I think boarding IS overrrated by its pratitioners. Especially the "coolness" factor, like they NEED the confirmation they're doing something right (e.g. starting this thread)! Jeez...

Do I want boarders gone? Nop. Some of my best friends are boarders. Do I want them to grow up? ABSOLUTELY.

This thread is so totally childish...

(BTW, I got hit by boarders more than by skiers. And almost NONE of the boarders stop to check if their "victim" is ok. At least SOME of the skiers do)

i believe people see what they want to see or want to remember...

I'm 45 - I don't cut people off and nobody i snowboard with does...

I've been in this category since 1988... It's getting better - but there's still a long way to go as shown by this horrible - passive agressive thread..

snowboarding is no better or worse than skiing imo. it's just another way of enjoying the mountains and snow. DMC is the man for sticking up for snowboarding in this thread, I'd lose my temper way to fast with some of this crap.

Now I understand why boarding is so overrated. It's simply a passive-aggressive behavior of its teenage participants. Great insight! ;)

WTF? I so totally don't even know where to begin... way to turn an actual good snowboard discussion thread into crap.

Boarding

No snowsport is overrated. Even cross country beats sitting in an office.

I split my time 50/50 between skiing and boarding and enjoy both equally. And I've had equal success in competition. For the record, there is a typo in the photo caption. I don't turn 62 until October.

There are immature skiers as well as boarders and we can only hope they will ultimately grow up.

Following a 34 year absence from skiing I resumed the sport and took up snowboarding in the winter of 96-97. I can't see ever giving up either endeavor. Here's a short video of the fun I had on both in Davos a little over a year ago. And that's not a typo - I hit 55 mph on my snowboard.

Right! "an actual good snowboard discussion thread", which begins with:

Yeah right .. NOWAY it could ever be overrated my friend.. It is a lifeline to those who know ..
So is basket weaving.
