He asks this question as he covers his head. :) I always thought they were good, but never really got into them to the extent that others do. Being serious now.

No. They span all different genres of music and are technically on. A Dead show is a wonderful event in which you can meet very cool people. I just love them. I owe you a punch in the nose for this one, Andy. ;)

Now, now, did I say anything bad about them?

Never listened to them much. Give me some Hendrix, Zep, Santana, Clapton instead.

I think your head is safe andy. No one wants to hit the helmet cam and risk not turning into a big star like yours truly.

Where's my masseuse!?

Hey um. Where'd you get that picture of not me? It's uncannily not me, as a matter of fact.

I saw them when they were great, I saw them when they were just OK, I saw them when they sucked and walked out (Glens Falls, 1982).

They were spontaneous, which makes for inconsistent shows and that's not everyone's cup of tea. Plus, if you were looking for THE BIG ROCK SHOW (e.g., Elton John, The Stones, Floyd, Zep, etc.) they were the antithesis of that. They were the best at what they did......

I was about to post something a long the lines of what marc said. I like the dead, but prefere hendrix, zep, CLAPTON, doors and the stones.

doesnt mean I don't listen to the dead, hell, I once answered a physics quiz with lyrics from casey jones. I didnt know the answer, and it was one of those train questions, so I said.

Does it really matter casey jones is "driving that train, high on cocaine" and the "switch man is sleeping",casey jones is "on the wrong track and heading for you". therefore meena (professors name) you should just give me a 10 (out of 10) and get out of the way.

Professor is cool, you could get away with stuff like that...and believe it or not she gave me 2 points because her husband was a huge dead fan.

Strong thread!! Damn floss...

Getting back to this:

They're a band beyond description

Maybe it was the lyrics that would haunt you and guide you all at once, Jerry's playing and certain warmth as a person in a much harder world, the hippy chicks, the second-hand smoke :flag: , the unpredictability of a new show to be crafted in front of you each time, the sense of community in the land of the misfit toys and many other factors.

Clearly not for everybody but for many the whole thing is and was a pretty important part of life's texture.

I know a little something you won't ever know

In some weir'd way, they were huge despite themselves. My first show was '82 (Portland) and I was hooked. Still a good listen.

09-17-82 Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland, Me. (Fri)

1: Bertha> Promised, Candyman> C. C. Rider, Althea, Me & My Uncle> Big River, Dupree's, All Over Now, West L. A., Throwing Stones> Deal

2: Touch> Woman Smarter, High Time, Estimated> Eyes> Drumz> Spanish Jam> Other One> GDTRFB> Morning Dew> Sugar Magnolia E: U. S. Blues
first "Throwing Stones"

you should be able to stream it here:

Nice set list. I'll have to check that out on archive.org.

The GF show was May 1982 and also had a nice songlist, but for some reason they were just way off that nite. I left at the beginning of the 2nd set, went outside and drank beer in the parking lot with my buddy who didn't have a ticket, and didn't see them again for 7 years. I thought they were all done. Garcia looked like hell that night, played terribly, the band had little energy and I thought they were washed up. Who knew they would come back from the brink in 1985 and then really take off?
