Is their a reason why jay isn't opening their tram. The summit must have enough snow to open trails, and glades except for the face. Do they usually open it later? I'm planninig on heading up on 12/17 and wish to catch a couple trams (although it is a waste of time)

Tram usually doesn't open early December. This is pretty standard. They only just got the Bonnie up this week and probably the Flyer going this weekend. One reason is no solid man made snow and groomed route down. If a groomer went up Vermonter, it would till up rocks. Another reason is lack of staff since they normally would budget staff for a more normal snow fall. Additional costs such as electric also is an issue, they need the skier visits to justify expanding sooner. Look at Cannon, they never get that Tram going before the holidays regardless of snow fall. Meh. Unless you are catching the first few trams or dropping off the face, there really isn't much reason to take the Tram unless you like standing around and waiting instead of skiing. Pretty sure the tram will be running by the time you head up though, so no worries. Personally, I have enjoyed the tram being off line these past few weeks :D

I second all of Riv's points and add that usually there is not enough demand for them to open it until Christmas...that said, with the cold and snow here early, there are more skiers and riders out...so the 17th is a real possibility. Best thing to do is to Email Jay and ask...

Actually when it comes to demand the opposite is true. During mid week late season when demand is very low they will run just the tram and not the flyer. Overall I think it is less expensive and gives access to the entire mountain. Right now I think the demand is too high for just the tram plus with the winds at the summit it is tough to open it without the snowmaking which has not been done yet. They are currently making snow on Northway. When that is complete I believe they will move to the summit. My prediction is that the tram may open the weekend of the 15th, which is also when they hold their season pass holders party.

Here you go, this is where I got my info from.

It snowed all day yesterday and we picked up another 4” throughout the day yesterday which puts us at 36” since the storm first hit late Sunday/early Monday. Weather today will include temps of 7-11ºF at the summit and 18-22ºF at the base with snow giving way to partly sunny skies. We’ll have 5 lifts open today including the Jet Triple, Flyer, and the Tram accessing at least 66 snow covered trails.

Hey no big deal to me if they run it or not except Saturday and Sunday I hope they do as it will ease the lines on the lifts. I personally do not like to ride the tram
