December 8, 1980...I can remember where I was when the news came through that he'd been shot, thinking it must have been some kind of accident and he would pull through. After all, he was in NYC with some of the finest doctors in the world; they would help him. A little while later the awful news came through- John Lennon, one of the Beatles, was dead. In the blink of an eye, just like that, snatched away from us. The horrible news shot around the world. I was in a state of numbed disbelief, hoping it was some kind of bad dream. But it wasn't. Then the news came out about how he'd been stalked and deliberately gunned down. More shock- why would someone do such a thing, to a man who had espoused peace, whose music had brought so much joy to so many millions?
To this day I still can't quite grasp it, and I'm afraid it changed the way I've looked at the world ever since. Life is so fleeting.

"And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died."
