You guys seriously are crying over spilt milk.

Everyone has mentioned that they rarely if ever ski bell to bell, but the demand the option of skiing a half hour more!

This pretty much sums up every argument anout Killington. "I want to pay next to nothing but demand that everything I ask for be accomodated".

Either pay for it or dont, but your arguments hold no water as its really just you wanting more stuff for less. Doesnt work that way nd why K sold to a management company that knows what it is doing.

Cue the, Pres Smith wouldnt have done it. Pres Smith is also dead and this isnt the 80's anymore. Something that was 30 years ago is not what something is now. Get used to it.

I totally disagree. For those of us that like to get the first chair, there is a HUGE difference in the mountain from 8 - 9 or 9:30 than there is from 9ish - 10. So opening later eliminates half to a third of the early day quieter slopes.

Sorry confusing my facts here on Pres. But the ultimate point here is that he doesnt own the place anymore. To use arguments about how he ran the place 30 years ago should not apply to how the place is currently run. It is an entirely different business environment.

The first chair argument is also full of it. First chair is first chair. Conditions will not be any different regardless of whether it will be at 7 8 or 9. To think that miraculously because they open at 9 or whenever is going to make the mountain ski way worse is grasping at straws. The people who get there late will still get there late, and the people who get there early will get there early. This miraculous power hour window just doesnt exist. NEWSFLASH, the mountain is always less crowded when they first open compared to an hour later.

Losing 6% of available ski time only matters if you ski every second the mountain is open to begin with.

Again, I want to pay less but get more. Its the underlying theme of any K bashing out there. Werent K passes well over a grand when Pres owned it anyways? In todays dollars you're looking at close to a pass that costs 2 grand. I bet Powder would be more open to staying open later, but everyone would bitch that they are raising prices.

Why do you ski there?
It's crowded. The conditions never seem to be good. It's not steep ( Maybe compared to Hunter or Sundown, but, it isn't steep). It's not well run. There is much better tree skiing up the road. K people just bitch all the time. Why are they there. When I lived at Sugarbush, you couldn't pay us to go down there unless it was Oct or May. So does killington suck or is it the people who frequent the place that suck because they bitch about the place?
Just asking.
Killington's not steep? The backside of Hunter is not steep? What are you comparing these places to?

It's not about the first chair so much as its about the hour between first chair and when the masses arrive at 9:30-10:00. Now you're looking at 30 minutes and maybe 2-3 quick runs, instead of an hour and 4-6 quality runs.

A. Clowns
B. Jongs

disagree

1st hour during weekends on a busy New England hill is the best hour of the day. Those who are into that are having their experience cut in half. Your argument would hold water assuming that everyone who skis Killington adjusts their schedule for a 30 minute later start, but that's not going to be the case. The people who show up to ski at 9 are still going to ski at 9. The people that used to show up to ski at 8, will now have to show up for 8:30. 30 minutes time lost = 3 to 4 runs of the best conditions of the day with no wait in line.

Now, I haven't skied K on a midwinter weekend in 20 years, so I have no idea how busy it is early in the day. Perhaps the business decision makes perfect sense. I can tell you when I was local, I really dug that Stowe opened ASAP in the mornings. I didn't always get there 1st thing due to working nights, but when I did, it was well worth it. I think Stowe has the right strategy operating just the Quad at 7:30, Opening Little Spruce at 8 and not opening the Gondola and other lifts until 8:30. I think that would make sense for Killington. Open the K1 at 8. Other key base lifts 8:30, secondary lifts at 9:00 or later depending on business needs.

You couldn't be more wrong. The buses and the masses start showing up between 9 and 9:30. Just because Killington opens 30 min later does not mean that the buses will also start showing up 30 min later... so the difference is that with an 8AM first chair you get an hour to an hour and a half before it really gets crowded... with an 8:30 first chair you get a half hour to an hour. Its a big difference.

Big difference between 8 & 8:30, guess you don't get there early often enough to know the difference between freshly groomed corduory or fresh untracked powder. Lot's of competition for those early turns & allowing an extra 1/2 hour sleep for some will make a difference. Big difference between 9 & 9:30 during the week also but that's not under contention at this time but kind of the same thing.

As for price K is competitively priced with there competitors, more than some & less than others, I'd put them right in the middle. Unless your talking about skiing some local bump near your house which in my eyes doesn't compare. Most local competition opens up at 8 or earlier on weekends except Stratton at 8:30. Being so open to a reduction in hours without complaint is a sign of apathy.

Ive skied at places with a varying array of startup times. Weekends, midweek, holidays, you name it. You're telling me the mountain is overwhelmed by 9 to the point where there are long waits and completely trashed conditions? Im just not buying it. To surmise that I havent gotten out early at all would be wrong, and yes to some extent people would adjust their skiing habits. Ive noticed it first hand several times when various ski areas I had passes with adjusted their opening and close times for daylight savings, or from year to year.

Which, ultimately, isnt my overall point. Im not that concerned with the loss of a half hour most people take advantage of the minority of the time, each specific example one can go either way on. My ultimate point is it doesnt matter what traveshamocky has happened, its going to be a problem. What problem, doesnt matter, Im not getting x amount of days, weeks, snowmaking, trail openings, accurate weather predictions, lifetime season pass gifts or opening times for a sub 400 dollar pass like ASC was passing out like skittles.

So back on price, they are middle ground price wise for their competitors, yet last year were open the most days, first to open midweek, consistent from the beginning of November to May? When fully opened they have more terrain, and by your own arguments as K fans better terrain? Yet you want more, and want to pay less. Again, in your golden days you comparatively paid way more and got way more. Id argue now you pay fair market price and get above average product. Id take the latter over the former.

I'll admit to skiing some late afternoons. It's fun to get one of the last gondi rides at 4pm, then head into some deep off the map woods. It's incredible at the bottom of the canyon at 4:30-4:45pm after everything is shut down on a late winter day.

No I realize its actually a FAIR deal compared to other resorts, and sustainable at the same time.

You want ASC prices and Pres Smith quality. One did not come with the other.
