Area skied: Killington, Vermont
Date skied: November 4th, 2008 from 9:30am - 1:00pm
Surface conditions: Spring snow, machine groomed, hardpacked (late)
Weather: sunny, 45F (base), 55F (summit) @ 9:30am
Today was my first day of the 2008-2009 ski season and the trip was a spur of the moment one as my son had the day off from school and the weather forecast looked decent for a day of skiing. I had wanted to wait until my birthday next week, but the extended forecast looked grim for any good skiing early next week, so we made the schlep up to the big K.
The drive up was like a bad episode from the Twilight Zone with pea soup fog most of the way, unrelenting until roughly Brattleboro. Temperatures where cold in the Connecticut River Valley and where actually reading 38F by the time we reached the base of Bear Mountain. By the time we reached the K-1 base, the temperature was 45F, with 55F at the top of Killintgton Peak at 9:30am.
Killington Basin:
Our first run was Great Northern top to bottom, which had suprisingly good base depths and not a bare spot from top to bottom. The snow was weird and a mix of gluelike wet snow/spring snow that made for an interesting first run. The glades area had better snow for runs later in the morning and Rime was the trail of the day. Reason was good, but East Fall sucked with hardpacked snow and developing bare spots.
Upper Great Northern:
I skied Upper Downdraft twice and the first run was cautious on my part with the small moguls taking a bit to get used to with new ski legs, but the second run was more fun and fluid. Cover is good on the run, but it is melting quickly near the top next to the peak lodge.
Upper Downdraft:
Lower Bunny Buster:
Overall the snow is handling the warmth in stride at the current time and is not really melting much.
