I think Watervilleโ€™s (which IMO legitimately does suck) has the mandatory bar drop also. Not sure I dig that trend.

A minute from the Alta exit off the I-15!
The bars of yesteryear did absolutely nothing for a small child under 5yo. I say that without hyperbole. I almost lost a kid early on ski teaching with the bar down near the top of a lift. I'll never forget this boy's face looking at me wide-eyed when he realized (after I grabbed him) what would have happened.

The old style bar is not coming back the way liability is in this industry. More kid-proofing and more automation.

You can ride superstar with the bar up
At this point, the auto close is a manufacturer-installed option based on what the resort orders, but AFAIK all D-Line chairs do lock closed if the bar is pulled down (whether automatically or not), and that may become standard for new detach installs.

The auto close option is less annoying than I thought it would be (SR has it installed on the Barker 6). It is quicker to close than most American humans, but it comes down relatively slowly and you do have a brief moment to get settled after sitting down.

Against the law in VT. Some places police it a lot more than others. Strangely enough Magic seemed to do it the most.
Yea magic always yells at people to put the bar down, but I've ridden up with liftys at killington and they'll ask me if I want the bar down or up

From what I have been told that during a lift evack someone has to shimmy down the haul rope and release the bar up by the grip with the automatic bar.

Automatic or auto locking, doesn't matter. Either one requires this.
K for SS ordered a UNI-G 6 from Dopp so they could have opted for auto or locking bars, but not standard on those models.

Iโ€™ll never understand this feature. Seems unnecessary and inefficient. It should just open as each chair passes regardless.
The technology seems to be much more useful for lifts with a mid load, where if someone misses a chair it then becomes available for the mid load. Camera's are cheap so it probably isn't a big deal to use it all lifts once you have it figured out.

Suicide 6 is pretty militant about it also.
IME, the smaller areas tend to be more aggressive with enforcement. I have no idea if that's completely coincidental, if the smaller places are more worried about getting called on it by the tram board, or if there's another reason I'm not aware of.

Tramway Board doesn't care, it's Liability Insurance. There is literally one carrier (Mountain Guard) that will insure small ski areas and the rates are astronomical. One severe injury claim and many are done.

I'm not sure that explains S6, which is ultimately owned by the Rockefellers under the Rock Resorts umbrella.
