bumps are just another niche of skiing... no cool or uncool about it... just let it be, let it be. Let it be, let it be....

I don't really understand why anyone would think it isn't cool. Do less people do it or something? Many mountains that have Jr. race programs also have frestyle programs. It wasn't always that why for sure. I never hear anyone say that skiing them is passé.

Maybe it's people who can't ski them.

I definitely think Mogul skiing is less popular now than when I began skiing in the early 90s..mainly due to the advent of terrain parks. Most of the park rats can't ski bumps well..but before terrain parks..mogul fields were some of the only places to get air. Here in PA there are race programs and freeride programs but no mogul programs. I just about never see mogul skiing on TV but X-games type stuff is always on.

The 1992 Olympics was the first to have mogul skiing as a sanctioned sport. It’s still strong on the World Cup circuit.

I’m not discounting the park factor you mentioned, but competitive mogul skiing has adapted to include the acrobatic aerials that people crave now. Remember when Johnny Mosley wasn’t allowed to do any inverts?

I see the NYSEF kids on the freestyle team at WF doing mad steezy aerials, but they also rip bumps getting to the kickers.

I'm still waiting for it to get me chicks like I was told it was going to...

My take on popularity: I think the height of popularity for moguls was 1998, with Johnny Moseley. I'd say Moseley is one of the most influential people in my life outside of my family (although there aren't many people who have really impacted my life, so not really saying much.) Unfortunately, the fact that what he was known for was going massive with such amazing jumps as the 360 mute grab led a lot of people, in combination with the rising popularity of snowboards, into the park that would otherwise be hitting jumps.

However, I know that the times I've caught skiing on TV this year, it's been WC freestyle. Obviously I'm more apt to catch that than other skiing, but I do think that, from an spectator sport aspect, mogul skiing is still pretty high up there. Also, how many times when you're on a chairlift above a groomer do you hear people say something to the effect of, "wow," unless commenting on a fall? Now how about lifts above bump trails?

We may not be the top level of cool anymore, but I'll take second.

Yep, you got a point, I've been on those lifts listening to others talk.... the bumpers down below have more "entertainment" value than ones on the groomers.

However, as someone mentioned, most don't know how to ski moguls and no where does it show more than in the bump field.... you can't hide it. Hence that becomes a problem b/c I also hear remarks that they don't want to try to learn due to embarrassment and making themselves look like goofballs since it would seen by all the folks up at the chairlift.

Can you say Wang Wong?

I went to Mogul Camp in 1978 with Wayne as a coach. The camp was on Whistler Glacier, Blackcomb did not exist. What a great time.

Come again?

To quote part of your post from another thread"here we go again with the bumps skier coolness".Love watching those old school guys on that video but the bump comps on TV now make me laugh at what is supposidly called skiing. After the final jump it's pretty much a straight shot with ass noodling and then the obligatory two arms thrust in the air like they just won the lottery.Reminds me of the ballet competition of the 70's.I guess I just like to see skiers carve and not just slam step to step.Still fun to watch though.I'm just busting balls here.

"Bumps skier coolness", huh? Okay, I'll give you that one.

However, stating that current WCers are somehow not talented skiers is what's laughable. Here's an interesting thread. You should really read it.
