I frequent a local seafood place and I usually get a lobster salad roll (the cold kind with lobster, mayo, celery). Normally there is claw & tail meat. Three weeks ago I ordered one and it tasted as if the lobster had been washed as there was no flavor. I started to look at the contents of the salad and I noticed that it was not lobster meat. At first I thought it was shrimp salad, but they do not carry it. After close examination I realized it was langostinos. Basically 100% lango meat. I asked the server and she said there was some lobster in there. I know langos as I get those deep fried with butter or served scampi style. They are great that way but not cold and dressed up as "lobster" salad.

The following week I asked the server and I made a comment about lango meat in the lobster roll. She said it was all lobster and the owner or manager came over and said he personally makes the salad and it is 100% lango meat. After he was out of site, the server said he was lying as the rolls are a mix of lango and lobster.

I ordered the roll and it was 100% lobster meat this time. This past Friday, I ordered one and I was back to lango and some lobster.

My complaint is the this place should put a disclaimer and state that it is not 100% lobster. Langos may taste like lobster when warm & with butter and some countries call langos lobster, but in New England a lobster is the 1 1/4 pounders and up.

So with that said I just finished a real lobster salad roll from D'Angelos. I am not one for chain places, but for the $10 this was superior to the lango meat being passed of as a lobster roll at a "seafood" place.

So I would like some suggestions as to where to get a good lobster roll, either hot or the salad variety.

I've seen a couple friends eat many a lobster roll at the Big E in the Maine building. These two look forward to it every year as they say they are the best.

I'm not a big seafood fan, but will occasionallly partake in a few steamers ot some fresh trout...

Hmm... there's a place south of Old Saybrook on that main street... Andys? I'll have to look it up. I can't vouch for their content but it was good!

price of lobster is leaving many restaurant owners and chefs desperate. haddock is not much better right now. if you like seafood, i would buy it and prepare it yourself, markup is getting pretty high.

I agree 100% with you, it's like when they say your getting crab and it's polluck meat. I was at my place in Maine last week and noticed lobster prices going down. A 1.25lb live lobster was $8.99 at a Portland fish market.

Red's has the rep and the lines but the two times I was there I wasn't impressed. Mainers used to joke that his lobster meat glowed in the dark cause the nuclear power plant was about a mile down the river.

The Lobster Shack right on the ocean in Cape Elizibeth, D'amato's(the original in Portland) or the Harreseeket Lobster Shack in Freeport are the best I have ever had.

also for a place to incorrectly name the food they are selling is illegal. lobster roll should not be mixed with other protein, while lobster salad roll may be. lots of times lobster in these things are dead in the tank and cooked off for meat.... i'm all set, i'll make my own.

Indeed. I haven't had lobster in years though. I'm more depressed about it being the off season than not eating lobster though.

We all have different ways of dealing with the stress of the off-season Marc.

For some it's lobster, for others it's goats.

In response to where the best" MAINE" lobster roll is to be had I submit to following
http://www.mainediner.com/

Live lobster can be as small as just under a pound to just over 4 pounds and still be legally harvested.
It is indeed illegal to misrepresent the contents of a "lobster" roll through the use of other forms of protein including the langastino ( Spanish for Prawn )
However, the langastino is a decapod as is the Homerus americanus or Atlantic Lobster. Leading to an ongoing dispute as to who may market the term "Lobster" and who may not.
Given that the world knows the term MAINE Lobster in reference to the Atlantic species it's quite obvious that the purveyors stand to profit from the sale of the lower priced inferior product to an unsuspecting public. Caveat Emptor

And BTW, The Maine Diner also has a 100 % REAL MAINE Lobster omelette that is incredible.

I don't know about the whole goat salad roll... I am still depressed though. I gave my skis a hug the other day. I'm even enjoying the cold weather vicariously through watching Ice Road Truckers.
