It's been at least 15 years but I can remember hiking down the Tuckerman Ravine trail in early August and seeing skiers coming up the trail to ski a patch in the ravine that was maybe 100 yards long.

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of what is left in Tux? Looking at the webcam on time for Tuckerman there is snow left, just wondering what lines would be best to ski next week on the first good weather day in July. I need to get some July turns in my quest for year round skiing and this looks like the only local (to me) option. If tux is burned out I am considering a trip to Colorado to meet a friend for some backcountry turns off Loveland pass, or a trip to Beartooth, but it would be best for me to ski local in July and save funds for a trip to Timberline over Labor Day weekend to get in August and Sept turns. Any other suggestions or options would be appreciated.

Loveland pass is pretty melted out. You'd be better off skinning up the actual ski area, which has some decent snow left

I was at a-basin Sunday. Still plenty of snow (relatively speaking) but the snow that wasn't groomed was melting in a jagged patten. Didn't look like fun to ski even if you're jonesing.

You might be already on at Tux as the weather forecast was fine for today. Tux was still real good according to someone I know that went this weekend. I'm looking into getting some Tux July turns on Friday or this weekend. Based on the webcam yesterday, the coverage would be better than at my last July visit back in 2011 http://madpatski.wordpress.com/2011/07/14/tuckerman-ravine-nh-july-2-2011-tgt-dont-panic/

I've had a ski streak going for a few years. You can generally find some local turns in July and in theory only need one plane ticket (or long drive) a year to overlap August and September (Timberline, the Alps or the Southern Hemisphere for liftserved). Good luck and who knows? We might bumped into each other.

I meant liftserved skiing as there are many areas in Western Horth America that hold snow year round, however Mt. Hood is the only liftserved skiing still happening after July (when Whistler closes) plus the other places I've mentioned. There are roughtly 8 outdoor liftserved ski areas in the Northen Hemisphere that offer skiing to September or very close.

Mont Saint Saveur had a patch when we drove by on June 29th. It looked like the remnants of the base of an aerial jump.

Actually there is an annual jibbers camp around the late week of June. This season was from June 25 to 29. They covered the huge big air plus move some snow at Mont Avila in late April/early May then cover it with hay until the camp starts. The camp ended on July 1 last season and this is how it looked.

Avila QC : June 30/July 1, 2013 : Turns under the influence of prescription drugs!!!

This July 1st, the Avila snow was pretty much all gone except a few patches. I got a pics and turn(s). I guess the 90F temps since the snow was uncovered didn't help. I'm looking at Tuck in the next few days for some more realistic turns.

That was it! I was one hill off!

I was impressed by the number of ski areas along that stretch. It reminded me of Austria.

Thanks for the info MadPatSki. I was hoping to make it up on July 1st, but life got in the way. I am now eyeing Saturday morning July 5th. The forecast looks OK so far. With a Timberline trip already planned for Labor Day weekend Aug 28-Sept 2nd July turns in Tux will bring me close to my goal.

In theory you can say your were correct. Mont Avila's trails are now connected and it has been part of the Mont St-Sauveur empire (MSSI) since the early 1990s. The MSS liftticket allows you to ski both areas, however that isn't the case for the Avila ticket.

The Laurentians are the historical hot bed of Canadian skiing, you had at least 30 ski areas in the region back in the 1960s. Some pre-date lifts, the World first rope-tow was invented a few miles from where Mont Avila is now. Many started popping up with the arrival of the snow trains and the highway.

Odds are that we are going to bumped into each other more that once. I have no definite plans, except Saturday, but I don't think I'll go far South for August/September turns.

edit: Beware a ski streak can be very addictive. My initial goal was 12 months in a row, then connecting two season together...and it's been going on ever since.

I see what you mean. If I make the 12 months ths year Oct to June should be relatively easy next season. Then the thoughts of July turns will be eating at my brain until it happens. Good luck continuing your streak. Maybe I will see you Sat. Going to try to get on the trail early. It's been a long time since I have made July turns in Tux!

We saw tracks on Baby Chute when we arrived in the Bowl at around 11ish. Was those your tracks? There was a huge crowds that I had seen 3 years ago with the BBQ, food, beer, skis, unicycle (I didn't get that one). They arriced in the Bowl shortely after us. Now on to August turns.
