Conditions: low to mid 20's, no wind, overcast with flurries

Knew it would be busy today, but wanted to take some turns with my son anyway. We got there about 8:30, and the main lot was already about two thirds full. We booted up quickly and got on the hill ASAP.

Conditions were pretty good early on. The base was rock hard, but there was some loose snow on top to turn on. But riding up North Peak I could see what was to come. There on the head wall of Upper Flume, young kids were side slipping the whole thing and scraping off what little loose snow there was. I even saw one tike snowplowing his way down it. Kind of sad. So we hit Walking Boss and Flume early, before it got completely scraped off.

Looked like there was a pretty serious injury on upper Flume, where someone apparently went into the trees and a guy on the lift said it was a broken leg. We saw the sled headed down to get them from the lift.

There were lots of lift stoppages too, with people that probably don't ski very often falling down when trying to load. I saw one young girl fall off the North Peak quad, fortunately before it had gotten very high. Looked like a group of four eight year old girls, already too cool to put the safety bar down.

We checked out South Peak and there was only one way down over there (Upper Twitcher to Jobber). That was kind of a nice trail since they had left a lot of whales on it, but it was crowded. On a normal weekday it should be pretty nice.

More and more people kept showing up, until around noon the place really jumped the shark. The lines became ridiculously long and it seemed like every trail was clogged with people, and had tons of places scraped down to un-edgeable ice (at least for my somewhat dull blades). The lodges were ultra jammed, so we left the mayhem for a nice lunch in town at some place called the Gypsy Cafe.

So it was about what I expected, but I'd had a faint hope that maybe it wouldn't be that busy. Still managed to have fun, but I've been spoiled by mid week skiing. I guess if I want to ski with my kids on uncrowded slopes, they'll have to cut school to do it.

I didn't take many pictures, but here are a few from the South Peak area.

Here's a couple of shots near the bottom of the (new this year) trail Jobber. Higher up it has a lot more pitch than this.

Also new this year is Lower Twitcher, which is covered with whales. No idea why they haven't groomed it to get it open since they could have really used it today. Higher up is Ripsaw, their double black (not visible here), which has had no snowmaking at all yet.

Tote Road quad. They've made snow under this, I guess for the groomers to use to get over to South Peak

Gratuitous crowd shot #2. That's the Gondola line on the right going off farther than you can see, and a full maze set up inside the building. The Seven Brothers line is on the left. We rode the Gondola only once when we arrived.

They actually have a lot of the mountain open already. It was just South Peak that could use a few more trails. Looks like they are going to open Lower Twitcher today, so they must have groomed it last night.

I wonder if they'll take their foot off the gas on the snowmaking now that vacation week is winding down. Hopefully not.

I have no weekend loon experience but I would imagine the north peak and east basin chairs would be quite a bit slower.

The gondola is always busy. Chairs that run from base areas are generally busier, I know that much. I can't imagine the masses lining up for the double.

Wonder if Seven Brothers is in line to be replaced with a HSQ. Would take a bit of pressure off the Gondola and get people over to East Basin and North Peak faster.

I was there all day too. Fortunately my GFs family was staying in one of the condos right there overlooking the little sister lift. Had parking in the garage and didn't have to deal with the lodge. Had my kids with me and the GFs son. Ages 5-8 all about the same ability. We just lapped the little sister lift all day and there was really no line. Kids took a long lunch and we went up to Northpeak for a bit. Crowds weren't too bad once you got up there. There was def some icy spots, but nothing too bad except for the headwall on Sunset that was completely scrapped off and had about 200 people all coming down it at once. Would have made a good old school Warren Miller film clip.

I haven't really heard anything about Loon's future lift plans other than they may consider moving the Loon Kanc quad up to Sugarloaf to replace King Pine. Then presumably they'd have to replace the Kanc quad with a new quad.

Seven Brothers seems a little short for a detach. It already has one of those carpet loaders to let them run it a little faster.

If they we going to replace a lift, I'd vote for replacing the East Basin double. That thing is really slow, so a lot of intermediates seem to take the North Peak quad instead, which is why Sunset gets hammered on busy days.

Good TR; wish I could get up there NYD as Loon looks to be in rather good shape compared to others but the bus got cancelled due to lack of interest (and the BSSC bus which was going to SR got cancelled so that's actually two buses getting cancelled).

I would second that seven brothers is a good HSQ replacement candidate but I could see how the mountain would have other priorities as lines are mainly an issue on this lift on extremely busy holiday/weekends and if the gondola is on hold (which has happened to me). I see nothing wrong with the Kanc quad but it could be a six pack the way the line is any weekend; even on a less busy weekend it can be a 10 minute wait to go up 1/2 the mountain on that lift. I think the North Peak quad has lines that run the same pattern as the 7 Bros triple. But I think the biggest constraining factor is that gondola which I believe is the oldest lift on that mountain. That could easily be an 8 person lift and I'm sure Boyne has plenty of other places they could use it.

Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe they are thinking to replace the Kanc with a six pack. That trail pod has a lot of ways down and could probably handle more traffic.

I'm puzzled as to why they didn't try to have more of south peak open for the holiday week. They could have pulled a lot of skier traffic over there if they'd just had a couple more trails open. The Lincoln express quad was way underutilized. Maybe the snowmaking system isn't as powerful over there yet.

Skied Loon on NYD, completely different experience. No lines, lodges half empty. They did open Twitcher yesterday and it was the RTD at the end of the day. Softened up, built up some moguls. The icy spots were an issue all over, but not bad enough to impact the enjoyment of the day.

I hope I am not going to ruin this for myself - but: My tip to deal with the parking & crowds = park at South Peak, Pemigaweset (sp?) Base Camp. No one goes there. I got there at 9:15 yesterday, parked right next to the lodge.

Funny you mentioned someone skiing into the woods on upper Flume on 12/30. While I was there the next day someone skiied into the woods on lower Flume. I was standing about 100 yds down slope. Didn't realize it happened until the kid's (he was prob 16 yrs old) mom started absolutely losing it. Screaming so loud that you could have heard her at South Peak. "My son's going to die!", "Oh my god, help us!" Etc, etc. I poled up them, kid seemed dazed but OK. Spent the rest of the time trying to talk mom back to reality until ski patrol showed up. Weird experience.

I haven't tried parking at South Peak, but it seemed to be a popular idea the day I was there. We stopped in the South Peak tent thing for a snack, and there was a long line of people buying lift tickets there.

I hope Loon eventually builds a proper lodge for South Peak. The tent lodge just doesn't have a good après ski feel to it. It's just too utilitarian or something.

Nice TR, I finally hit Twitcher and Jobber today! I like them! they add a lot to south peak. LOTS of snowmaking today all over Loon, much more terrain will be open by this weekend.

The reason there wasn't anymore terrain open on sp is that there was no snow over there at all going into Xmas vaca week, warm weather hampered all snowmaking efforts. Things are looking much better now.

Eventually there will be a 'normal' lodge at the base of south peak, I might be dying of old age by then but there will be one. Along with another summit HSDQ, and a lift crossing the river

The South Peak Resort owns the land the Pemi Base Camp sits on. Plans might change but originally they planned to develop the Lincoln Express area into a resort hotel (no lodge). The base of public skiing would be moved near the South Mountain Bridge closer to Town. New terrain would allow access to the Lincoln Express, Tote Rd and the rest of Loon. There are no plans as of yet for a lift across the river. South Peak's proposed site plan is on their webiste: Proposed SP Site Plan

South Peak Resort may not be planning on a lift crossing the river, but Riverwalk has plans to do so. A couple of years ago the plan was to have a gondola going right into the lobby of the hotel, and bring guests to the base of SP. Whether/when it happens we'll see! Below is a link to Riverwalks website showing the proposed lift.
