Well, now that the snow is here, so are skiers who get lost and spend the night (or part of it anyway) outside. These two were lucky....found just before 9pm. Not much other info except for this clip.

Ha, I love that town. Just one stopsign. The only towns that are better are the ones in northern maine that dont have names but numbers

my comment is to know your surrondings and be prepared. Some will rag on those who ski with packs but it just may save you if you get lost or like to travel out of bounds a bit. Never hurts to investigate your surrondings before you ski even if it is a lift serviced mountain. I say this a lot, people rely to much on others and not enough on themselves.

there are some pretty fine BC trails that were originally cut by the CCC in the 30's. TThe town of Underhill had dreams of becoming a resort town. Underhill even put a 1000' lift on that side (gone). Stowe was too fast to put a lift to the top, that killed underhills plans. the trails are still there. I'll bet they were going after them and got lost. Headed there tommorrow AM.

the article says they took a wrong turn so doubtful they were looking for any trails over there, lol. if they were looking for a trail on that side of the mountain, it would probably have been the tear drop.

This is a shot from the backside of Mt Mansfield. This my fav view of the peak. To be honest the skiers probably went off just on the other side of the big ridge coming off the right side of the summit. I don't photograph that view cause all the radio/tv and cell towers are seen. The scan of this image is 10 years old so it's not very sharp.

Every so often skiers/riders go off the backside of LP at the Bush and end up in Starksboro. The last time it made the paper they walked into the Starksboro General Store and asked when the Sugarbush Shuttle came by...

Most of the time when folks head into underhill they are looking for Hellbrook. Friday was super Gnarly up there. I had plans to ski off the chin but changed my mind due to winds, temps, and visability. In this case I'm not sure how they screwed up. The gondi wasn't running so they may have skiied over rimrock then hiked the chin, or they may have gone out the toll road and hiked along the ridgeline the whole way, which would have been some really exposed hiking. Brrrrrr. There is a bad weather route around the chin, and if visability is bad, it is VERY easy to wrap too far around, not even see the adam's apple and drop in past the point of no return very quickly. Hiking out even a few hundred vert in that high alpinr scrubb is nearly impossible if you dan't have snowshoes or skins, and it's still a nightmare on stuff that steep. Honestly you're prolly better off just dropping out to underhill, calling a cab to Smuggs and walking thru the notch.
