As much as I'd prefer that there would be enough natural to adequately cover their trails, I'm glad to see that they're able to make some snow!

I think they need to get the message out that they can and they are making snow. (the fact they are blowing on the top says a lot about conditions there.) Magic has the rep that it's only good on a pow day, that it keeps folks away. If Magic ain't viable, then there is no skiing there on a pow day either, so I'll take the compromise.

My point in the photos is that they are putting their money where their mouth is, so don't count Magic out.

It's funny, but Magic might actually be one of the better choices this weekend for beginner/intermediates. I presume most of the snowmaking effort is on the usual opening route, which is a great crusier. It won't be nearly as crowded as anywhere else in S VT. Sure the black chair is slow and the lodge is basic, but if I find crowds to be the biggest challenge when skiing with my wife who is a beginner. A large portion of the usual Magic clientele is advanced, and I'm skeptical there will be a whole lot open on skiers left of the hill - which might mean even less folks on the mountain (Pure speculation - I'd love to see Matt chime in with the opening plan ;))

And free entertainment and Magic Hat schwag on Saturday to boot.
I'll probably be there just to get a few runs in with the wife and hang out.

Yeah, based on my one visit to Magic this year (so far -- I'm going again as soon as the base is back) they seem to be grooming the cruisers much more comprehensively than they used to. I'd definitely consider taking beginners and intermediates -- even if the lift takes twice as long to get to the top you'll still get more runs in than at a place like Stratton with 20-minute lift lines.

I have taken novices and begginers to ski at Magic and the lack of crowds was a big plus. The ramp at the top of the Red Chair is very intimidating while the black chair was a benign ramp.

Sorry everyone, it has been quite busy and interesting at Magic the past two weeks. Unfortunately most of my internet time has been spent monitoring another skiing forum that has been the unfortunate host of some members (or should I say multiple aliases) with a bone to pick with Magic. Anyway, I need to finish the Alpine Update so I will keep this short.

We plan to open with Upper Magic Carpet, Medium, Wand and Show Off. We will open other trails very liberally if we happen to pick up any significant snow on Friday. Unfortunately the snow on Monday wasn't as much as expected and it was very light. It fell on top of bare ground and/or a rock solid base so anything ungroomed still isn't safe. The snowmaking crew has been telling stories of death defying (well maybe not that bad) slips and slides on the ice under the new snow.

Trails slated to get the snowmaking treatment next are Trick, Hocus Pocus, Lower Magic Carpet and then on to the West Side.

The open trails on Saturday will be very, very nice corduroy. While we won't have a plethora of trails open for the weekend, it will be a great relaxing weekend away from the crowds. Come on by and make some turns, relax in the lodge and catch some football (go GIANTS). We have events both Saturday (3-6) and Sunday (7:30-midnight) nights too.

We hope to see you soon.

This is unfortunate and pretty effin lame. You should try to get the admin/mods on board to take control of it. That would never happen here.

At this point they have taken care of the problem members and we are very grateful. Skiing and Snowboarding forums are a great asset to the general public as well as the resorts and you have to take the good with the bad.

Agreed, but we've come to expect at least a small amount of civility here. Opinions and criticism are welcome, but it should be constructive. It seems to be a good formula as we have more direct participation by members of the industry (like yourself) than any other board. Also, AZ is busier than ever so it seems the members like it this way as well. However, as you know, you can't please everybody...

It may just be better to ignore it. Look at Stowe, Stratton and Kmart. Their staff nearly always ignore these posts. Better to let it whither on the vine than to feed it.

I agree and for the most part Magic (ie. myself) ignored it. The "Magic Faithful" on the other hand got tired of it and went to bat for their mountain. It was an exceptional circumstance and one that I doubt is comparable to the standard negativity associated with any other mountain. I must give credit to the Magic Faithful, they are one of our greatest assets and I thank them.

Think Snow!

Thanks for chiming in Matt, we always appreciate your input!

It's unfortunate what happened at that other place. As said above, we try to keep crap like that under control around here...
