Date(s) Skied: 1/14/201

Resort or Ski Area: Magic Mountian

Conditions: New snow cover ~ 5in

Trip Report: Skied Magic mountian on 1/14. Got there early for the Red Chair dedication ceremony. Two trails ( Trick and Medium) were open from top to bottom in the morning with a good base of man made snow. Conditions on these trails were good until the after noon when it began to get a little skied off. Magic Carpet opened up late morning and by early aftenoon was broken up with people skiing on it to have very good conditions for a non groomed challenge. The weather was excellent with fluries in the morning giving way to some sun shine with temperatures around 20 degrees all day. . All in all a great day at Magic.
Stayed at the Magic View in the night before. Great deal and very nice room.

Billski The groomers were getting skied off by late in the day. The natural trails held the snow really well. Thin cover in some areas but easy to avoid. The afternoon on these were very good with the snow softening and getting broken up with people skiing it.

I should be there this weekend. Maybe Sunday.

I'd love to support Magic and ski it some time this winter.

But don't they have something pathetic like 7 or 9 trails open right now?

It's not my fault they refuse to make snow.. when certain mountains in Massachusetts have way way more open terrain. (not to mention literally everywhere in Vermont)

I don't think it's lack of willingness to make snow. To my knowledge they have a ton of work to do on their snow-making systems, which can begin when they have met their shareholder quota.

That being said, IMO they can't be beat for best skiing in S. Vermont on a powder day.

Fine...its this attitude that keeps the crowds to the surrounding resorts

I'll take those 7 pathetic trails over any of the "Mountains" in Massachusetts.
My 7 year old wants to ski this weekend and when I told him we'd go to Sundown
he said no, he wants to go to Magic instead. There you go.

For the record they were up to 16 or 17 trails this past weekend. With some (hopefully!) snow expected for the weekend they should probably get the same for this weekend. Trail count is over-rated, go for quality not quantity. And they deliver on quality trails (i.e., narrow & empty)

All I can tell you is that I saw lots of smiling faces at Magic this past weekend... They have been making snow at every opportunity but as was mentioned the system needs some upgrades to increase capacity. Prior to this past weekend, the other surrounding mountains still had significant portions of the their mountians closed. So BD all I can tell you is to stay in MA and enjoy your mountains and then when you think your ready you can come to Magic and check it out.
