I recently won two lift tickets to Magic Mountain for AZ ( thanks again ). My daughter and used them on a a great sunny Monday and had the Mountain to ourselves, it was great. I have some pictures I will send along at another time. Right now I would like to delve into the knowledge and expretice of the AZ members in hopes of getting an explanation regarding a particular tree there. About 2/4 s of the way up the Red Line lift there is a tree to the left of the lift the is sprouting and interesting display of Bras. My expertice in these matters lead me to the conclussion that they were a varity of sizes indicating that there were a number of former occupants. if anyone can provide any information as to the origins of this practice I would be grateful.

That's funny! I've seen similar trees in different ski areas as well. Could it be the chemicals in the man made snow that cause a tree to sprout female undergarments?

Its a common thing at ski areas. I heard that it started at a resort out west years ago, though I don't remember which one. Some places clean out these trees as often as possible becuase it doesn't fit in with their family image.

To my knowledge the first may have been off chair 5 at Vail. The panty tree was accumulating garments as of 95...or maybe earlier. Beaver Creek started to develop one around that time but cut the tree down for the image issue.

The one at Moun Snow .... isn't that off the Canyon Express? I forget.

The Mount Snow pic was taken on one of the chairs on the North Face...

Similar tree at Mountain Creek, NJ about 1/4 the way up the Gondola. In addition to the aforementioned "boulder holders" this tree is also sprouting several pairs of woman's panties.

I am still hopeful that one of the occupants in MY gondola decides to add to the collection!!!!

I'm usually too busy trying to balance myself with my skis while being shoved around by 7 other people on the bucket to enjoy the view! :p

all over

I have seen them all over the northeast. Burke, Stowe, Loon, Wachusett, etc. Most of the trees I've seen are under a lift line and are mostly populated with Mardi Gras beads of many colors. The undies and bra thing is in the minority. Just started in the last 3-4 years.

Burke staff went so far as to put a leprechan up a tree who was embellished with all sorts of items by passers by.

I believe it is the result of abnormal testosterone levels combined with excessive adolescence.

Sure beats trying to reach over to the lift pole and affix your favorite sticker.

Good clean fun....

Beleive it not, we even have one here in PA. I never learned about it until late in the season at Blue Mt. when I rode the Vista Chair with my daughter for the first time all season. It's a beginners chair and there are better places for it, as all of their chair lifts run up lift lines, as opposed to the slopes, but there it was on a beginners lift line.

Whenever you have a random hookup the night before, you're supposed to take her bra and throw it into the panty tree. That's just how the tradition is supposed to go. How many people follow that is another question.

I beleive that the first one was in Vail, under chair 5. That's the Sun-Up Sun-Down bowl triple chair lift. The first time I skied Vail was in 1990 and it was there then.

Westchester County, NY and a Mountain near you!
The "panty tree" at mt. snow has been on the north face for at least the last 15 years. In fact, I noticed this winter (it was the first time I was at Mt. Snow in about 2 years or so, that the tree was moved to the other side of the trail. It used to be on the left side of the trail as you're heading up on the lift. However, at least this past season, it was on the right side of the trail when riding the lift. The lift actually crosses over the Freefall trail. The "tree" used to be on the downhill side where the lift crosses Freefall...now its on the uphill side. :)

Also, I agree with skibum..the tradition definitely stems from some apres-ski conquests. 8)
