I'm laughing here. Believe me I've heard it all. I don't know what they advertise but have you ever been to Denton? Avalanche is a steep slope with a true 66 degree slope to it. As far as the triple, quadruple or whatever type of fallines that our advertised I will not comment :)

I'll remind you all though that I am the general manager of Ski Sawmill and not Denton. Denton is now a partnership between my brother-in-law and another party. I grew up there though and have to say they have some of the best skiing on the east if you don't like the crowds and hustle and bustly of big ski towns seeing how they are located in the heart of nowhere.

I've always been straight with my customers here at Sawmill and could only urge other resorts to do the same. For instance the other day a guy called for conditions and I told him the truth... I said we have slush with intermitint ice patches... I was suprised when he said "Cool, Thanks for telling me the truth, I'll be right up!" The flip side is that conditions are always changing and customers don't always understand that. It might be fine in the morning and awful at night or vice versa. I could tell somebody when the call it's not raining and two hours later when the show up it might have just started.

As far as a funded ski trip. hmmmmm

I'd give away some tickets if you guys want to come up. Let me know who's interested and I'll see what I can do. I'm talking about Sawmill tickets thought not Denton. But if you were this close it would be worth checking it out. Ski Sawmill is more of a beginner mountain that is a feeder for larger areas. But we have our fair share of terrain as well but if you are really looking for a challenge then Denton is the place to go!

Sorry I didn't post in awhile but we were understaffed today and I gave away tickets to our local PBS radio and TV station members. We were expecting around 150 people to show up and they suprised us with 400. Needless to say the general manager got to work in the rental shop, lift, and teach a few lessons. Gotta love small resorts:)

Enjoy the rest of the day all!

Boss Man,

You have plenty of material to work with. At Loon they do the shelf method and angle the blade to pull the material in betweeen the bumps down to the next shelf to be made. (Crown of the bumps are 11' on center) I personally haven't done it, but having been a snowmaker and groomer for years, wouldn't be afraid to get it done. The key to capitalizing on your seeds is to blow a couple inches of dry skiable snow on top of the run that you built.

Good luck

Hey Boss_Man! If you attempt this, please update us with progress photos as well as some of the final result. It will be interesting to see what you come up with and hopefully, this approach will expand to other feeder hills.

I'll definetely update you guys with photos when I get a chance to work on it. Still been busy with the crowds and then had to work on getting flowers for my wife. Gotta love last minute Valentine's day shopping. One of my lift operators bailed me out and brought me up some flowers to give to my wife so I'm gonna make it through another Valentine's without getting in trouble.

As far as pictures of Avalanche...I'll see what I can do. I'm hardly ever at that area anymore because I have my hands full here. But I'll try.

I've always wondered about that 66 slope. Can't imagine anyone being able to ski it. I've skied 50 degree and that was plenty.

The top third of the slope is the steepest part which is probably 60-100 yards. When snow is made up there it's constantly changing the incline but the top third is steep. They can't groom it unless they go down and even then it has to be just the right day. I'll have to get out there with a protracter and measure it for you all :)

Wish you could ski it for yourself.

Just an FYI - As far as the 66 degree and "steepest in the East" thing at Denton goes, the problem folks had with the claim was Denton's Avalanche slope is not 66 degrees (it's around ~27), nor the steepest in the East:

http://forums.alpinezone.com/viewtopic.php?t=5677

There's a difference between degrees and percentage of a slope.

In any event, to get back on topic, I skied these seeded bumps at the local hill yesterday:

And this is exactly what I was thinking. A lot of confusion about percentage and actual steepness. 66% of 45 degrees which is what they rate as steepest comes out to 29 degrees. Jeremy Jones might slide across a true 66 degrees. But then again that boy is crazy :eek:

Boss Man,

Once you get your moguls built, be sure to...

-mark them off with ropes and signs, so that less capable skiers don't accidentally fly into the bumps and get hurt / angry / litigious;

-maintain your bumps by having a pack of skiers sideslip them at the end of each day, or every few days;

-use whatever marketing tools you have to tell mogul skiers that you have bumps;

-if you can, hold a mogul contest!

I typed a long reply earlier this week but my session timed out and my reply got lost in the shuffle.

I'll keep this one short because I'm tired after a busy President's day weekend at the slopes. The tube slide beat me up today.

As far as your argument with Denton goes you are barking up the wrong tree with me. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything at all I don't know. Just to remind everyone I am the General manager of Ski Sawmill and that is a handful enough:)

I hear your concerns and would recommend you voice them to the management at Denton if it really bothers you. I can tell you that I can't remember a single person complaining about the claim during the 10 or more years I grew up there. Granted I was a kid and probably didn't hear it all but still. I was suprised you all were so frustrated by it. Anyways if you gotta get it off your chest then write them a email or letter.

Sorry I couldn't give you guys more on that topic.

Bossman, hook me up with an industry comp and I'll seed your bumps all day. Your resort is on my radar anyway to promote Blankinstructor.com, kill 2 birds with one stone. (maybe hit montage on the way home if its a late day there and say hi to some former co-workers)

Boss_Man ... it's not our intention to make you feel uncomfortable about Denton, sorry if you took it that way. Enquiring minds want to know, is all! I think it's really cool that a resort manager is being so candid about his resort and I'm glad your becoming a contributing member of AlipineZone. If you come across a picture of the steep at Denton, could you post it for us? We'd love to see it. Now, back on topic. Please keep us posted on your progress with seeding a mogul field at your place!
