Microsoft Word Question: Disappearing files

Quick question here from someone who is kinda computer literate.

This semester I have resorted to typing class notes and saving them on my computer in folders for each section. About two weeks into the semester, I noticed that when I went into the folders on the hard drive, certain files that were saved and closed would not appear. When doing a folder search using "tools," they would appear.

Now I'm getting tired of having files simply disappear and reappear when I open the folders. What is going on here? How do I get ALL of the files in a folder to appear whenever I open up the folder in a window?

You may be saving them as hidden files, for some unknown reason. In "Properties" for the folders, make sure it says "Show all files" or Show Hidden, or whatever the terminology that applies is.

That expends all my applicable knowledge here.

Is it just word files that you can't see? What OS, version of Word are you running?

And here I am thinking I would be the first Macky making a sarcastic comment. ;)

TB did you do a file search? Maybe they were moved. You might want to pick up a thumbdrive. I back all my important documents on them.

Who says he doesn't? There are versions of Word for Macs too... ;)

Maybe that's his problem, the worm in the Apple is eating his files...

1. Marc, you've got the wrong thread - not the misquote the person above you thread.
2. Word on Mac is still a Microsoft product so it's still a problem
2a. OpenOffice is better

It's the latest version of Windows XP and Word. I will make sure that they aren't being saved as hidden files.

Are they missing with Windows Explorer or just the File/Open box in Word?

If they are just gone on word, the box at teh bottom of Word's File/Open can change the type of file, and thus the only files that Word will see when trying to open the file. If they are also gone in Windows Explorer, I'd do a search on the drive. They may have been saved to a different folder?

Hope this helps.

They are missing from just Word.
So when you select File>>Open, or the Open button they are missing from the dialog box that pops up? Is that box pointing to the correct directory when it opens? It looks like it should point to the directory that you last save a file to, or My Documents. Do your files end with the .doc extension? If not then Lostone may be on the right track.

Great that they are only missing in Word. That means they aren't missing.

Does it happen with all files, or just with certain ones? When Windows explorer finds them, does it find them in My Documents, or elsewhere?

We've got them cornered. They can't get away now! :uzi::flame::lol:

I've been focusing on that as well.....it appears that there are multiple Spring 2006 Class Folders for some reason. I don't know how they were created.

Spring 2006 Class Folders for some reason. I don't know how they were created.
That scares me.

You can't have folders with the same name in the same folder. Is this a folder name you made, or did it just appear by itself? If the second, it sounds like a virus. There is nothing in Word that should make its own folder, and nothing that should make anything like Spring 2006.

Is that where your files are being put? Are those folders in the same main folder? (Either C: Or My Documents? )

Wondering if it is something you are making by mistake or something that is replicating itself. If it is the second, I'd want to see what was inside, but I'd advise deleting them.

Try just saving them to the desktop, see what happens with that.
