Moguls. Love 'em or hate 'em?

I used to despise bumps, as they were a huge struggle gor me to get down. After the Hunter gathering and watching the good bumpers, I have decided I want to be a good bump skier like them. I have been working on my bumps a bit. I can hold a decent line in a set of small bumps, but as they start to grow, I get worse and worse.
This past week I was up at Killington, and on one of the trails they were blowing snow like crazy all day. As the day went on, it was starting to get bumped up. It was a nice soft snow, and not huge so I was having a ton of fun in the conditions, and I could carry a line for the most part. Down at the bottom of the run there was a true set of moguls already big and deap. I was attempting these, and was struggling a ton.

So for now I like them, but dont love them. Some day I hope to love them as much as some of you guys and be just as good.

Nice! You're on your way. Holding a line (and choosing one for that matter) is one of the most difficult parts. Once you can do that consistently, and then when you first feel some real A&E, you'll be hooked. Have fun with it!

As a snowboarder, it's a love-hate thing :). Sometimes it's fun to see if you can hit a mogul, try to land right in between the lower ones, and keep doing this until the bottom. Other times, when you just want to carve, moguls are hell for snowboarders.

Used to be alot more comfortable in them in my younger days. We would ski them 75% of the time. I probably didn't have very good form but I didn't wipe out too much and had fun. Didn't ski for 5 years when I first got married. Then taught my wife to ski, and we pretty much stay on the grooomed now. I'll make a run or 2 on the bumps but I'm nowhere near as comfortable as I once was. But confident enough to do Middleearth at Castlerock, a few years ago. Maybe this year I can try Castlerock Run.

I would say ME and CR are pretty equivalent with CR maybe being a bit trickier in spots. Liftline (and probably Rumble, never done it) on the other hand...

Moguls

I have fun playing in them BUT, I refuse to do them when they are icy. There is just too much potential for serious injury to an old-timer like me.

Hate em and believe all mogul trail should be groomed flat as soon as just one starts forming ;)

I'm sorry, Andy, but I am now forced to ban you. It's been fun...

Moguls and woods define Eastern skiing. Without them, we would be the Diet Coke of skiing... "Only one calorie - not skiing enough!" (trying to do Dr. Evil impression)

Doesn't mean everyone has to love 'em, but we do have some AWESOME mogul runs at the northeastern resorts!

Regarding icy moguls, I will say that if I had to choose between two evils (and didn't have the option to just stay home) I'd rather ski icy moguls than a slick, featureless icy groomer any day.

Personally, I both love and hate moguls...I love to hit them for a couple runs, but my legs aren't built for them, and I can't ski them all day.

I like them a lot more after this season of working on getting better on them.

You looked pretty good that one night at Sundown. You definitely got holding the line down. You just need to relax a bit and stay more forward and agressive on them. You're well on your way, but the curse of bump skiing is that you'll never be happy with your form...

It was good to watch you hit them with style. After you told me I was hopping off of them I definitively noticed that I do that a lot and need to roll with skis down the downside of the bumps more... it is a curse once you get a hold of some sort of bump technique.
But hey, at least this year I'm hitting the bumps, unlike previous years where I'd just traverse them or avoid them all together.

Despite the fact that I suck at them, I love moguls! They're a challenge, but that's what I think makes skiing fun.

exactly - anyone who skis would feel the same way. people that dont like bumps, ski 5 times a year and have little sally legs from watching reality TV all week. whatever, I am not saying i am very good in them, usually can only get a good zipper line in the spring when they are softer, but they are still FUN and a challenge, which is what true skiers should want. greg just put this thread up so he can talk about how great he is in bumps and how much he has improved this season according to his video and pictures, which he posts on a daily basis.

Actually, Greg is an amazingly good mogul skier and it's really fun to watch him and the other AZ bump hounds in action at Ski Sundown. As for me, I can get down them just fine, but they are not my thing so much as trees, steeps and powder are.
