Mount Snow 2-7-09

Resort: Mount Snow

Conditions: Partly Cloudy/Partly Sunny (which ever you prefer in the AM) mostly cloudy in the PM. Temps warming from the teens to the low/mid 30's Moderate wind from the South that really wasn't a factor until you reached the immediate summit area. Packed Powder all over the place with the occasional slick spot in the high traffic areas

Report: Ho hum, just another great mid winter primarily packed powder day at Mount Snow The majority of the mountain was wall to wall smooth corduroy. A bunch of bumps on the Northface (ripcord, jaws , The wall, Chute, Olympic , Bear trap had the USSA B mogul kids on skier's left through the seeded course, skiers right had decent lines and some nice snow. Moderate crowds, nice temps, all in all a very good day!

I have been liking the Upper Ledge / Ledge trail this season for the bumps. I also liked the Hop today for the bumps. I only did two runs on NF today. The crowds were moderate but at 3pm - the GSE had the longest lines. Maybe everybody got some runs in after the competition at Bear Trap.

What do you think of the conveyor belt at the GSE? Each time I was in line near the gate someone in a group loading had some type of mishap.

last time i was there it was the same. not sure how bad it was befor they put it in but when i was there last spring the chair seemed to stop way less.

Bear trap had the USSA B mogul kids on skier's left through the seeded course, skiers right had decent lines and some nice snow. Moderate crowds, nice temps, all in all a very good day!

I should really pay more attention to the schedule of events at the mountain. We had some family up and (of course) got a late start to our skiing morning. I suggested to head over to Sunbrook since they're wouldn't be any lift lines and the slopes would be fairly uncrowded. Although it wasn't terrible, it wasn't what I expected.

So we moved over to Carinthia and did laps on Heavy Metal without any lines at all. And enjoyed some great runs (mostly around the features).

Personally I think the conveyor has been a great addition to the GSE that has sent more FULL chairs up this year with LESS stopping. The whole key to success is just to be "lazy" and lean on the loading gate like it says to. Where people screw up, is they try to walk across the conveyor belt.

As a parent, it makes gettsing on the lift with my young kid MUCH easier, and I know from having talked to my kids instructor that they LOVE the conveyor belt.

What you need is a good coral person. Was up at Ragged Saturday and the "Coral Lady" - as reported in some threads last week - gets employee of the year. Never an empty seat on the six-pack. Even with a pretty good lift line (due to race going on), the singles line flew!

FWIW, the guy they had running the liftline over at Nitro this past weekend, was GREAT!! That line tends to be the biggest P.I.T.A. to keep under control IMHO with the ropes on either side of the main loading line and a population using the lift over there that tends to have a high concentraction of folks with ADD/lack of common courtesy

The guys running the Summit Express are usually the best, and the Shotgun formation is the best I think if you have the room for it...

There was some "immature snow" of the light variety that was happening on/off from about 6PM Saturday until around 1st chair Sunday, then the cold air started mixing in and the "immature snow" started to mature, first into the clear, frozen, pellet variety and then finally to some mature snow.

Just got a text message from my wife who is on the hill right now, and she says that the groomers are skiing well as some nice machine groomed/loose granular snow.

I skied both Sat and Sunday at Mount Snow. What a difference a day makes. Saturday was an almost perfect day. No hard-pack or ice anywhere, excellent coverage and 100%open. Sunday started warm 39-40 degrees at the base but got colder through the day. No niar but some flurriesfor a few hours. The top 1/2 of the mountain was frozen solid and very windy. The North Face was on wind-hold all day. Since I was with my nephew, we skied off the Canyon quad all morning. The snow stayed soft from the top of the Canyon quad on down, above that was solid hardpack and ice. Quite a few bare spots now on the natural trails. Since its colder now everything should have firmed up a bit. We definitely could use some more snow especially before the holiday week. Unfortunately R**N is forecast for Wednesday.

What a difference a week makes! Last Sunday was awesome....with still some fresh spots on the very sides of the trails. This Sunday, whole different ball of wax. A true showing of how at the mercy of mother nature we are.

I, too, skied Snow both Sat and Sunday and agree that Sat was much better. But, Jaws, Challenger and another on the North face were groomed flat and hard as ice on sat...at least in the a.m. The rest of the mtn was super.

I stayed in the woods all day yesterday.....Alternating between Sap Tapper, Fantastiks and Boonies. All were skiing pretty good, despite the warm temps...although the snow did get a big grippy in spots due to the warmth and not being packed down like on the trails.
