Resort or Ski Area: Mt. Snow

Conditions: Hard pack, ice, some pp

Trip Report: Well my day started bad and finished worse. I was planning on going to bromley to take advantage of the sunny exposure. However, i got such a late start i was having my doubts. Got onto 91 and realized i hadnt taken my wifes resume out of the car so i had to turn around. Then, i got stuck in traffic in springfield for about a 1/2 hour. Decided just to get off exit 26 and head to Mt. Snow, which i really didnt want to do. Anyway, got there around 10:30 and realized i didnt bring any gloves. Had to drop 54 bucks in the ski shop for those. Ok nothing else can go wrong. yeah right. Headed up to the summit and over to bear trap looking for some soft snow and bumps. Bear trap was still frozen pretty solid and the bumps were terrible. Horribly shaped and really spaced out. Went back down and found decent snow on Yard Sale with a nice mini line on the left. Went over to the north face. Ripcord looked like an ice sculpture. took a pass on that. Plummet and free fall were groomed flat. Nice snow on the edges but rather boring. Chute was bumped up solid top to bottom. Unfortunately it was still firm as petrified wood. Took some runs down that, knocking myself around those cement bumps. PDF was bumped up with glare ice between. Not terrrible but nothing you could really let loose on. Headed back over to bear trap to see if the sun had at least softened it up. It had, marginally. Tried to make something out of nothing over there by going as fast as possible but on the 4th run, i had a grade A number one knee crunch on the face of a real set up bump. Damn, it hurt like hell. Not sure what happened but it was almost as if i was extending and didnt see the oncoming face. Knew i was in trouble so i basically side slipped the rest of the run. Thank god its so short and not steep at all. Had to ride back up to get down though. That pretty much sucked, basically made it down long john on one ski. Couldnt help but think that this place has my number. It claimed my first acl in 1989, i've snapped a ski in half there, destroyed a binding and also did about 12 somersaults down ripcord a few years back. Someone was telling me from the get go today that maybe i shouldve stayed in bed. My knee is %$^ed up pretty good, i'll give it 2 days then go get an mri. I dont know if i can go through a 3rd acl surgery. Hope that isnt it. anyway, hope everyone elses day was better than mine.

Oh man ... sorry to hear about your knee. Go see a doctor soon. I was there on the 24th and 25th and It was really good conditions. Looks like you had a cloud over your head all day. I'll keep my fingers crossed for recovery.

Sorry to hear Pat...that really sucks.

The past week has been a little tough for the bump crowd, everything being frozen solid and all. I spent alot of time in very hardpacked bumps all weekend and I was a little sore myself on Monday. But nothing like a blown ACL.

Hope that's not what it is. Keep us posted.

Just joined this site... found out about it from a post on the New Jersey Young Professionals Ski group site... I was interested in the thread on Mt. Snow cause a friend of mine has a room open up there this weekend and I was contemplating going... sounds like conditions are marginal tho? Maybe I should pass and go cycling instead... that is if it really gets to 60. :D

Dont read too much into my report. I barely skied the main face and to be honest, it looked and sounded pretty good from riding the lift. I spent the majority of the my time on trails that are prone to get skied off and slick so if you arent stupid like i was, i bet you would find conditions were not bad at all. There is some ice but all in all, they did a nice job grooming the place. My report is biased to say the least.

Hi Cheryl, and welcome. I think the main issue right now with alot of resorts is the cold we've been having the past 2 weeks...but this weekend will be alot different and the warm temps will soften up the snow nicely.

This might be the best time to go skiing, and maybe a last chance of sorts for some. I'd keep the bike in the closet and go up to Mt. Snow if I were you.

Sorry to hear that 2knees. Hopefully you're back in the good graces of the snow gods in a few days.

Tell me, is it true, "a bad day skiing is better than a good day at work?" Sounds like you 've got an exception going here.

Please keep us posted, Pat. I really hope it's not that bad and that you can recover in time to get some spring skiing in. You mentioned maybe hitting Killington in May this year to ski Superstar together. If you heal up, I'll make it happen. Good thoughts and vibes sent your way.......
