Might I be the earliest registered mountain rep? That ought to earn some love from the gang. I was in AZ before it was cool for mountain reps to go cyber. In fact, I was in AZ before I worked for K, or Attitash or SR. Thus my original handle lives on. It might not earn SR any love, but maybe it decreases the likelyhood of hate? I like to think so. :)

Handing out lift tickets would go a long way towards this purpose. :dunce:

In this thread it doesn't matter if the mountain is deserving or not, it's about who gets the positive threads. JimmyG's girl Paris Hilton doesn't deserve the attention she gets, but she gets it.

You get halo effect you just disagree with me. Let me give Magic as an example, I've never skied there, but I've read in other forums about it from some real magic haters. Here it seems in bad taste to say anything against the place.

I believe you guys when you say it has the steepest terrain in Southern Vermont, but you know, it's still Southern Vermont.

It's almost like you feel the mountains that get the most love are overrated. I know you feel that way about Sugarbush (couldn't disagree more). Magic may be southern VT, but it doesn't ski like southern VT, for the first 8 or 900 feet of vertical anyway. Aside from terrain, Magic just has a cool old school vibe. That's why I like it. That's also why I like the BEast and MRG for that matter (as well as terrain of course). As was pointed out, the "love mountains" tend to change periodically. A few years back Sugarloaf and Cannon were getting all the love. Then it was Burke and Sugarbush. Now Magic and Snow. It might just be a result of where the most active posters visit, but again, in each case I think they're all deserving. You don't see lots of love for places like Okemo or Stratton becuase the majority of active AZers like more technical terrain or places with that skier's mountain vibe.

Indeed! We should start a mountain rep thread.

Wow, I can tell you haven't skied Magic with a comment like it's still Southern Vermont. Despite its location, Magic is about as un-SoVT as a mountain can get considering what the competition is offering up (no slight against other SoVT areas but they are really not in the same league as Magic in terms of terrain). You can say bad things about Magic all you want (not you specifically), but most "negative" comments about Magic (here and on other forums) are generally from people that think the mountain is awesome but poorly managed. Me thinks there will be a lot less negativity about Magic after the new owners turn things around this coming season.

Back to the topic at hand, Whiteface certainly gets its share of AZ love though generally only from a few posters ;) Hunter gets lots of love. Burke gets a ton of love though it seems like the love fest with Burke may diminish slightly since TB will not be reporting. Bush is obviously the number one pick for most AZ love (sometimes a little over the top, don't hate me for saying that :D ) and Loaf gets a lot of loved but that love is certainly in check with reality.

I don't really see huge amounts of love for Cannon, Jay, or Wildcat. There have been some good threads and Wildcat picked up lots of good vibes for early/late opening. Other than that it seems very general conversation and not all out lovin'. I think the spirit of the thread is pointing out the over the top love fests, or at least that is how I interpreted HPDs introduction to the thread.

I don't really recall Cannon getting tons of love. Certainly nothing out of proportion with most mountains. I really don't see Magic and Snow getting loving right now... they are getting attention, and justly deserved, because of management changes and lots of activity and enhancements. There is a difference between trended love versus temporary attention. Burke, Loaf, Bush, and Whiteface seem to have very high love trends. Other areas do come and go but not due to loving but rather topical conversation. Lots of topical conversation does not equal love. When mountains start having appreciation threads though.....

;)

There are some mountains that if a person says something negative here, many people will start jumping on them telling them how they are so wrong. So they just dont post it.

Okay. Fair enough. Let me post a few things I don't like about the three mountains HPD started this thread off with:

1. Sugarbush: I wish the Slidebrook Express ran midweek as I rarely ski Sugarbush on weekends or during school vacation weeks.

2. MRG: I don't know, maybe snow reliability? But that makes MRG what it is and I've been very lucky and had great conditions during my three visits.

3. Magic: The lower 1/3 of the mountain is a long runout and actually a bit boring. The upper 2/3 more than makes up for it though!

UR right, that's a good call, where did all the Burke lover's go?

I'm still here, just not visit/posting a lot lately. I think a lot of us Burkie's are waiting to find out what is coming at the mtn in the future. There isn't a whole lot to talk about at the moment.
Trailboss (another Burke lover), is a bit frustrated with their season pass limitations at the moment. But I'm hoping he doesn't hold a grudge for too long

Amen Brother Hawk. I remember in one of the Sugarbush worship threads, I believe started by the Reverend Blasko, I stated that I thought da Bush was a great mountain. I said it was definitely in the conversation when talking about the best mountains in the Northeast. However, I also said I didn’t think it was head and shoulders above some of it’s worthy competitors. Let me tell ya, the faithful didn’t like reading that at all. They tried to verbally stone me to death in the forum square.

Never be afraid to post something against the prevailing current in hear. When everyone is in agreement all the time things get stale.

Find me the thread, Brother High Peaks. I'd like to read it. Oh, wait. Is this it? I see no stoning there.

I think Sugarbush is totally deserving of the hype it gets, from me and/or others. It's not just Sugarbush though. I like to consider the entire MRV as a single skiing destination. Sugarbush+MRG is hard to be for great skiing within a small geographic area (less than 6 linear miles end to end). Haven't skied either, but I suspect the Smuggs/Stowe combo is the only other region that could compete. I'd like to know, specifically, what it is that you don't like about Sugarbush (or the MRV) that makes you feel they're not deserving of the praise they receive? Which areas/resorts are better?

You hype up Whiteface as much as anybody hypes their favorite mountain. You know we have you leading a group on a visit this year already on the docket. It/you better not disappoint! ;)

How do I now? There's about 1,000 SB worship threads a year here. After awhile they all seem the same.

It/me will not.

Did someone actually say that HUNTER gets alot of love? Give me a break!

When I started here all I ever heard about Hunter was Joey hill, stupid NYer's, your skis get stolen, poor terrain, rude people, most crowded hill in the world, etc. Yes, I got on people for that because it was untrue. Then, a bunch of AZer's actually went there and skied and found out the hype was bullshit. Now people don't rag on it anymore.

To summarize: incorrect assumptions are debunked, now we assume there's a halo effect.

The truth is a halo effect? I'm done with this thread.

The search function works pretty good. Here's a challenge for you: Find 5 thread from 2007 (if there's 1,000, 5 should be easy) where Sugarbush is unnecessarily praised, or the praise is out of proportion with reality, or is simply untrue. If that's too easy, also find 5 for Magic and/or 5 for MRG. I'll be waiting.
