This place is about 5 minutes from the house, on the way to and from work....and they're shutting this particular location. :-x The manager I know wasn't there yesterday, so I couldn't get the low down. One of the guys mentioned it may have been slow sales, but rent (the place is in a strip mall) was a factor. They have 3 locations and are now going to operate only 2.

I'm bummed. This was a great place to get gear, and also that quick after work "I need more wax" stop.

I wonder why did they choose NOW to close the doors and not the end of the season last year. I wonder if that rent went up in the past two months, if thats the case, it was real short sighted by the landlord in a day where there is more property than there are businesses.

Maybe they already have someone else and they wanted to run the ski shop out?

The Ski Market that was closest to me (Manchester CT) closed this year, and they were only open seasonally before that. Not sure of what caused them to close, but it was not in a great spot to begin with(tucked away behind Buckland Mall).

Its just a sign of the times if you ask me, I just recently lost both our closest supermarket(Big Y) and Blockbuster store, leaving the strip mall next to us just about half empty with no anchor store(unless you consider a Fashion Bug or Family Dollar store an anchor).

The guy I spoke to yesterday says the new lease starts in October. So they'll close the first week of September and take the rest of the time to move stuff out.

I'm going to hopefully get more details when I talk to the guy I know there next week.

I am sure they will have a "rather sell it than move it sale". I know I would.

This might be a chance for people to pick up some "back shop stuff" like jigs that they don't need 3 of with 2 shops.

Yeah, I miss that Ski Market. Not the most helpful staff I've ever encountered in a ski store, but if I was at the mall anyways it was an easy stop.

I'm going there next week to wheel and deal. Hell, I'll take posters.

I saw on TV that Action Sports is having a liquidation sale at the Cheshire store.

We had a local chain of ski/sports stores go out of business a few years ago, Alpine. Two of the Alpine locations are still in business run by former employees of Alpine as two independant businesses. So the staore may rise again after liquidation if the base numbers were sound.

That stinks..check out www.racewax.com for wax...closing of ski shops is just the way of the world. Less people are buying new skis and online retailers are expanding their market share. At least 3 local ski shops have shut down near me in the past decade and the few remaining are hanging by a string...

I'll have to see what goes on. I beleive the manager was looking for jobs elsewhere? I'll have to get the lowdown.

GSS...good call. May be time to just order that stuff in bulk once a season.

Not surprised to see shops closing given the state of the economy and the business trends of online sales taking away from local shop sales. But it is always a bummer to loose a cared for shop near you. It is amazing how much more cheaply you can get gear online compared to the local shop. Often times 50% less or more. I have not bought skis in a shop since 2002 and boots since 2003. I often wonder how online shops do it and I fear it may be black market related but I have no proof on that so I say innocent until proven guilty. I would imagine shops that are larger, have better service, and are closer to the mountains or local beer/school race leagues and metro areas will fare the best.

I'll also throw RaceWax.com some support. Been using their red/green hydrocarbon wax for a few years now. Great stuff, and very reasonable pricing.

Well, made my final stop yesterday. The entire store was 40-70% off. I also made a trip over there on Monday.

So, here's my two day haul: Two fleeces for Mrs. Glenn, wax, stone, cork, base cleaner, scotch brite and not pictured...a cable lock. Grad total: $100. Each of those fleeces was originally $70. So not a bad haul. Still bummed their closing.
