I don't understand the nostalgia...

TBars/Pomas/JBars/etc... pretty much sukc.. Unless it's the only thing that the terrain can support..

Au contraire!

Surface lifts were the ultimate in intimacy and a great way to meet new people. I always enjoyed "rescuing" the attractive young ladies who lost it all up-slope and slid into me.

Nice on exposed ridgelines and such, it's very rare for one to have to be shut down for wind, unlike chairs. A Poma can run faster than a Fixed-Grip lift.

More relevant to Northeast Slopes...they can be better for beginners, as they're often scared by chairlifts, and they're (I would think), much cheaper and easier to maintain than a chairlift.

I love t-bars and pomas, they are faster than chairlifts (minus some HSDQs), you can really add on the runs. I've mentioned this before, Mount Saint Anne in Quebec, on its north side had a double chair, t-bar, and a poma. The poma could deliver you to the top three times before the double did once.

But, there was one time when going up the t-bar my friend caught an edge, and we fell. We didn't move in time and the next two skiers collided into us, followed by two more 2 seconds later, repeat that scenario two more times.

So glad I couldn't understand French then......

This must be the case (it's too obvious) but has there ever been a ski bar named the T-Bar?

Not a big fan of t-bars or j-bars, but pomas I like.

The old summit poma at Pico was a good lift.

Yes, there is a bar called the T-Bar. It is on rt. 30 near the Plattekill entrance. All of the local skiers hang out there. WOW, DMC doesn't know that?

ditto on all points. I hate riding a t-bar w/ someone who's height or skill level is much less than mine. Weren't J-bars really rare? The only one I remember, maybe anywhere, was at Mt Tom, but then I was starting skiiing in the early 80s so maybe many had already been taken down?

Poma lifts rock. Anyone have pics of the old Pico summit poma? I really miss that one!
