hello all, been lurking for a while and decided to hang my hat and stay for as long as you will let me.

i live in New Hamshire but grew up in northern Maine. I had a whopping 26 year lapse (lived in the south) from skiing but started again this year. biggest difference? the gear. holy crap. i went from skiing 210 blizzards back then to a 163 shaped volkls now. not a bad ski i guess. its prob me but they are a little sloppy in the tips but plant your big toe down and they carve ok.
i have been out a bunch at the local hill in the town where i live to get back in the groove and my 1st big trip will be killington on feb 8,9.

thanks for having me...

Welcome aboard! Glad to see another rebounder on board!

When I switched from uber-long to shaped "short" (relatively) I was lucky enough to have picked the right ski, and the transition was easier for me. I preferred a stiffer ski.

It sounds like you already made the $ commit to a ski. I would think, to sort out if it's you or the ski, you might want to demo some other stuff at some point this season to see for yourself. Demoing is a vastly better education than listening to a guy in the store, no matter how expert the rep is. S/he can't get into your mind or your skill set (or in my case, bad habits), really, only you can do that.

You might consider the Wildcat demo day in March 27 . Lots of interesting stuff, not just skis.

Since you've been out so long, I'd love to hear what you think about slope conditions and grooming compared to 26 years ago. I'll keep my opinions to myself and listen!

yeah, i went into buying my new skis blind knowing nothing of the new shaped stuff i took a gamble and did ok. i got a really great deal on them so if i use them one season then i guess it worked out well. once i get more time on the snow this season it will be a benchmark on what to look for in a new set down the road. the slopes seem like they havent really changed much other than the crazy costs for lift tickets. i grew up on the small hills but did a few trips growing up to sugarloaf and camden snowbowl etc.

Hey, onedkcharette, if you remember skiing at some of the small Maine areas that have gone out of business, the NELSAP Forum http://www.snowjournal.com/page.php?cid=forum1 would be interested in hearing from you. I skied Enchanted Mountain and the Colby Slopes back in the late 60s-early 70s. And we're following the misfortunes of Eaton Mountain, which tried to re-open this year but ran out of time and/or money.

Welcome aboard.....orginally a Mainer as well. I have also moved to NH, been here since 2002, although 98 if you count college. If you don't mind me asking what part of Maine are you from and where do you hang your shingle in New Hampshire?
