A couple resorts have posted new trail maps for the upcoming season:

Loon has a new map showing the south peak area.

Cannon suprisingly has added Mittersil to the trail map. I wonder what effect this 'advertising' of Mitt will have on traffic over there.

Nothing on the Attitash or Crotched sites showing the new trails. Any other new maps out there?

Crotched hasn't put their new maps up, but they have printed them. The new trail created last year in named 'NCC-1701' (retarded). The only real new trail from this summer was of of comet There's a brand new cut across from Comet over to launch pad which let's lets the green skiiers bypass that little hairy drop just behind the lodge. I was kinda disapointed. No Summit access, which seems like such a waste. They started to put SNOWMAKING gear up there for cripes sake.

A lot of Star Trek fans in the area?

I'm guessing. All of Crotcheds trails are 'space themed'. Should have called it enterprise if they wanted a trek theme. 'Hey, let's go over NCC-1701' just sounds silly.

Yeah, I'm thinking Enterprise is a better trail name. I guess they wanted to go with something more unique. I'm sure regulars will come up with their own name for it, I'd call it Kirk.. :)

Sunapee has posted the regular map (not the interactive one yet) on the website showing the new terrain park on eastside i believe?

On one hand, it kind of detracts from the back- or side-country appeal that Mittersill has. On the other hand, this probably means the Mittersill trails are patrolled now which will make me stop worrying about being lost in there or worse. One thing's for sure, there'll be more people in that part of Cannon. I'll definitely be hitting Cannon this year just to check it out.

mittersil

I think that the inclusion of Mittersil trails is a very exciting development. I always thought that this inclusion is just such a natural extention for Cannon and brings in a huge appeal to the area proper.

I have to admit that I never made way over there , mainly because I never managed to hit Cannon when it had a really suffiently big snowfall to make the trek worthwhile. And even then, I'd have to hug the right handside of the area so getting back wouldn't be such a big issue. Seeing the entire network is really exciting and invites exploration.

Perhaps I'll invest in a pair of alpine trekkers. If anyone out there wants to unload a pair, I'll buy it.

I received some mail from Cannon that mentioned Mittersill's trails were being added in some capacity. The big question is: when will there be a shuttle back?

Note to Cannon management: if such a shuttle were to run on occasion, I'd happily pay for the service.

What i can't figure out is how James Niehues has managed to put a strangle hold monopoly onto the "ski-map artists" market. He's like that guy Hans Gibali that paints all the Italian countryside and seaside murals in all the Pizza Joints on Long Island.

I can't quite read the small print on the map, but it looks like Mittersill is labeled as "Proposed Future Expansion". I heard somewhere that they were going to run it MRG style and had no immediate plans to do any work over there.

New Crotched trail map with "Kirk" ;-) and two other trails added.

http://www.crotchedmountain.com/images/CM_Trail_Map_2008.jpg

I skied "Kirk" last year and it's a short, easy green...not quite as wide as Galaxy.

The new trail "Re-Entry" will be good for beginners...the last part of Comet near the lodge is a bit more difficult for beginners to negotiate.

IMO "UFO" would be a good short trail to create a mogul field on...

That's what it looks like to me too. There are no names or difficulty designations on the Mittersill portion of the map. I'd highly doubt that it's going to be patrolled this season. Adding it to the map doesn't make much sense to me unless they were planning on actually expanding into the area in the next couple of years. Even so it can only serve to confuse people at this point, or trick them into picking Cannon over neighboring resorts who have added new terrain... ;)
