New Crotched trail map with "Kirk" ;-) and two other trails added.

http://www.crotchedmountain.com/images/CM_Trail_Map_2008.jpg

I skied "Kirk" last year and it's a short, easy green...not quite as wide as Galaxy.

The new trail "Re-Entry" will be good for beginners...the last part of Comet near the lodge is a bit more difficult for beginners to negotiate.

IMO "UFO" would be a good short trail to create a mogul field on...

Yes on the UFO idea. It'd be awesome if they continued down the side of equinox as well. Or even better, have it sidecut thru the trees between equinox and velocity. Plenty of room in there.

On a side note, I believe there will be some cleared out tree areas over by 'Kirk'. If they're cleared, I'd suggest we go ahead and start cutting thru them and encourage some decent glades. :-D There's be some awesome room to the left of big dipper as well, if they'd only clear them out. Much love for soft snow bumpy tree areas.

That's what it looks like to me too. There are no names or difficulty designations on the Mittersill portion of the map. I'd highly doubt that it's going to be patrolled this season. Adding it to the map doesn't make much sense to me unless they were planning on actually expanding into the area in the next couple of years. Even so it can only serve to confuse people at this point, or trick them into picking Cannon over neighboring resorts who have added new terrain...

Yeah, I dont really understand it. The only reason I can see is that they are advertising the completion or near completion of the land swap.

It does strike me a little irresponsible if they are not going to patrol it. Undoubtedly it will increase traffic overthere and the worse case scenario is that somebody gets in over head and gets hurt.

I wonder if they are including mittersill in their total acreage?

Considering access to Mitt has never been hard, and outside of Big Jay is the most well known side country terrain in the east, I doubt liability is of concern to Cannon by including it on the map. Sounds like its just a way to hype up the mtns assets.

I was wondering if it's no coincidence that they decided to put this on the map the same year that Loon opened some new terrain... Sort of a "Hey look at us, we have new terrain too" kind of thing. Not sure how much they view Loon as competition though, two very different ski areas with mostly different clientele I'd imagine.

On one hand, it kind of detracts from the back- or side-country appeal that Mittersill has. On the other hand, this probably means the Mittersill trails are patrolled now which will make me stop worrying about being lost in there or worse. One thing's for sure, there'll be more people in that part of Cannon. I'll definitely be hitting Cannon this year just to check it out.
I really doubt Cannon is going to offer patrol coverage for Mitt. You can notice on the map that the boundary line is unchanged which suggests you are still very much on your own over there and hiking back if you get lost or go the wrong way.

Seeing the entire network is really exciting and invites exploration.
FWIW, that is the proposed trail network and is not the exact lay of the land currently.

My take? Their new Manager mentioned something about this development when he was hired. Cannon's new page is also a bit more resorty with travel info and some flash. I would not take this to mean that Cannon is any closer to a land swap but rather is finally capitalizing on free marketing just promoting what is already known. Mean while, they continue to de-fang the Cannon image, make the place more family friendly, and now are trying to get more of a resorty type image. Brian's suggestion about a response to the Loon expansion is an interesting suggestion. Perhaps an influence but I doubt that was the main factor. Will be interesting how many yah-hoo's get themselves in trouble by seeing the new map.

BTW, while we are talking about changes at Cannon this year.... $60 lift ticket? No weekend rates? At least we still get two-fers (also price increased) and NH resident days. But $60 for Cannon? I think it was $55 last year? $60 is almost as expensive as Jay (*cough*) and MORE expensive than Wildcat. I don't remember Cannon ever being more expensive than Wildcat as long as I have been paying to ski these two mountains. Looks like I will be earning turns more often than I thought this coming season. Lame-o new Cannon management, lame. That higher price tag better come with some better snow making equipment.

I was thinking the same thing. Last year it was $54 weekend, $42 midweek, so up to $60 is a big change, especially for midweek skiers. Also the NH resident day price has gone up $5 each of the past 2 seasons. My pass is only $30 more than last year so it;s not really a big deal too me, but i hope the increase in price means there will be improvements.

I am doubtful about the improvements. I am skeptical this is not just the new GM coming in and making some serious changes. The biggest improvement Cannon needs, and has needed for a while, is a big boost in snow making. I don't recall any announcements this year indicating much is being improved in this category. The $18 mid-week jump is off the f'ing charts, unbelievable. Guess they just don't want people to ski there on Mondays and Fridays and the mountain will be residents only on Wednesdays. Who pays $60 to ski mid-week??

Don't count on it. It's almost certainly meant to help offset increased energy costs.

Wow! That does seem really steep! Well at least pass holders will have the place to themselves mid-week..
It was empty midweek last year, I think I waited in line maybe 10 mins total for the entire year midweek. I guess it will be even less crowded now. Good for me, not for the mountain.

Ragged has a put a new map on their new website. No new trails that i can see but many have been renamed in a 'rag' theme.

When I hiked ragged last summer I hunted around in spooks gorge for a while and found a couple of new trails that had never appeared on the map, they have not been added to this map.

Rivercoil,I just saw Cannons new $60 day rate and was very surprised.Cannon's one plus has always been that is was a much better value than other big mountains. My pass went up a low $30 to $475,which is still pretty cheap.
Don't bet on Cannon having much in improvements just because of a new Mt manager. His hands are tied by the budjet restraints of the State DRED.The former MM(Bill Roy) was a good friend and was very open about how the wheels turned.
On another note,I like the new trailmap cuz my house is now shown just below the pond at Mittersill. Can you see me waving from the deck?
