Depending on what type of skier/rider you are, you may want to try Okemo or possibly Stratton. I know that they are more on the expensive side of ski areas in VT, but it will allow you to have the ability for on-site ski-in/ski-out lodging as well as something to do for New Years. I think that both ski areas have fireworks displays. Jackson Gore at Okemo is good for ski-in/out as everything is there in one building (hotel, restaurant, skier services, etc.), though Stratton may be more what your looking for with the small shopping "village" at the base.

Killington is also a good option as there is quite a bit of skiing for all ability levels and I would bet money on that they will have fireworks/stuff to do around New Years. It's not as convienent as Okemo or Stratton as I believe that you have to drive to get around the area. The Killington area is also good if the actual ski area is really busy, because you have Pico right next door with just as diverse terrain without the crowds. Stratton is the same way with Bromley being about 5 miles up the road. It kind of depends on what kind of skier/rider you are. If you want challenge you may want to head for Killington or something further north (although coming from Jersey, northern VT may be a bit of a haul for you). All the ski areas mentioned above offer just about everything although Okemo and Stratton tend to be pretty tame.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the board!

Give Stratton a try. The terrain there is almost identical to that of Okemo. If it's a bit busy at Stratton, Bromley is just up the road and has a nice sunny exposure with all types of terrain. Though I would base myself at Stratton rather than Bromley.

Don't be fooled by it's size. There is plenty of beginner terrain at Killington. How's a 6.5 mile beginner trail sound? When it comes to partying, you'll be hard pressed to find something equivelant to the Access Rd.

Are you referring to Juggernaut? I think that Juggernaut is one of the prettiest and most peaceful trails at Killington. But read the sign at the trail head and don't take it lightly. My arms and shoulders were shot after poling past those endless near-flat sections.

Actually I was talking about Great Eastern, but thanks for reminding me about Juggernaut, that is some great scenery!

We cut off of Jugg at Fallsbrook after we got sick of the poling. But for that stretch on Jugg we only saw two other people. Is that section of K typically quieter than most?

Yep, you'll usually see more than two, but not too many. Then again, I've only done it a couple of times myself. I normally do the same to Fallsbrook and over to the Devil's Fiddle or Outer Limits lift.

Narrowed my new years weekend search!

Ok so i have been looking alot and we are going to go to vermont
ok so the only place i have been to is Okemo.. i stayed at winterplace.. was nice

its only going to be four of us!! two couples.. we arnt the best skiers.
So we are looking for somthing on the mountain or close by...with places to eat and go out to have some drinks.. and something to do on new years eve (concert.show.fireworks ect..)
so its down to these four places.. So if anyone here has any information on these places or its surroundings or even lodging it would be great.

stratton - (looks to expensive) but the village looks nice
Okemo - been there and was nice.
Killington - looks nice and sounds like alot to do around the mountain
Magic Mountain - the Inn has great prices.. from what i read on here it has rough terrain..
Mt Snow - not much for lodging but sounds like the resort has few things to do at least.

if you got another suggestion just make sure its not further=) im in new jersey..

THANKS ALL :snow:

cross magic mountain off your list. they are making a lot of improvements this year, but i doubt snow making capacity will be increased enough to offer your group much terrain by new years eve. there is a reason that inn has great prices, low demand. might be nice later in the year, but unless we have epic natural snow in december, not likely.

stratton would probably be a good location, your call on the price. give sugarbush a shot, it is only one hour further north than killington and you'll probably have a better experience there than the american ski company locations (mount snow and killington) that you are considering.

O.K. - if you aren't the best skiers then Okemo is probably a good idea. Lot's of groomed trails and it's family oriented, which means the rowdies aren't as omnipresent as other locations.

If you want a selection of 1/2 way decent restaurants, an array of nightlife options and a range of skiing abilitiies then you want Killington.

I can't comment effectively on the other areas as I haven't been there in a few years. Regardless of your choice I'm sure you'll enjoy your vacation.

Looks like a good list, as Steve said though I don't think Magic fits into your plans too much.

I merged your two threads together so that we keep it all in one place.

...........

sugarbush.. hmm looks nice im gonna have to look into this :snow:
That's just what a half-million other skiers are saying.....
my $.01 would be for Whiteface & area. ....not sure though, haven't been there over NewYear's....but the Lake Placid area is a cool area.... Another area/mtn could be Cannon (NH)....enough northward that you might(Might?) escape the Rte 3/93 onslaught.....
