It's the same drive time. I assume you'll come up the Northway. I live off exit 8. It takes me 2 hours to get to both.

I don't want this to be a Kmart bash thread, but it's a different skiing experience at WF then Kmart. For me I'll take WF.

I wouldn't guess they have more then LP. Plus nite life is spread out at Kmart, you can walk a bar crawl up the main street if you want. I hardly ever go into LP in the winter. There's enough bars and places to eat for me right in Wilmington.

Drive is close.

No bashing one way or the other, I agree WF is different, doesn't make it more desirable to the general population, not knocking it, just saying, it's different

Killington is in Killington, Whiteface is not in Lake Placid.

Now don't get me wrong, never skied WF, I'd like to. You asked why folks may take VT over NY, I'm just giving you my thoughts. It's not an argument as to which is better, just my thoughts as to why people may want to stick with VT

Hunter wasn't mentioned so I'm stayin out of it... :)

Actually - in economic downturns - Hunter does well due to it proximity to NYC..
In the past bus trips have increased...

I know, we're just discussing things. Differences of opinions don't have to end up like it did with Tinman. Just respect the others right to their opinion as you explain to them how wrong they are.

I live and ski in NY, and I don't think any of these expansions are going to have major increases in the ski populations @ Gore and Whiteface . . . But then again, maybe they will.

Thirdly, for some reason, when I talk to people down in the city, the dream is always to buy "an old farmhouse in Vermont". You rarely hear someone say "I just want an old victorian in Saranac Lake." I think that to a lot of people, Vermont still equals Eastern Skiing, and NY is just another place for them to go until they get their Vermont Trip together.
;-)

10 years ago I was the same way. I always hoped to ge a place in Vt. Then I discovered WF and started to get into the whole outdoor rec. thing that the ADKs have to offer. It was one happy day for me when I bought my place in Wilmington. Maybe the skiing is a little better in N. Vt., but I don't think life is. JMHO.

I agree with you. I'd much rather buy a house on Trout Lake (by Gore) or Lake Placid (with that extra 2 mil I have lying around ), but I don't think that a lot of people think like you and I do.

Went kaycking out to Whiteface Landing on Lake Placid last week. The houses on the shoreline and islands are unreal. Sounds stupid, but 2 mil is on the lower end.

Good post Hard. The APA, DEC and NYS constitutional restrictions are both a blessing and a curse living/skiing inside the ADK. Park.

For this year 10% I think gas prices might keep some NYers in NY too.

thanks. i have friend with a house up there so i may make a trip for fun with the boys this winter just to see how much has changed.
