Dude, I know your obsessed with yourself, but if you'd paid even the slightest attention to what others have to post, you'd know I've shown nothin but love for Hunter on this forum. I skied there for 41 years.

Wow you're older than I thought..lmbfao...:spin: I thought old people are supposed to be jolly..

VT Skiing better/placid Best town however

Vt skiing especially around burlington is much better skiing than NY there is not even a comparison. Snow is greater, acreage is greater, mountain not as narrow, more full mountain runs, mountain not as broken up by ability. Whiteface is nice but it is no sugerbush or stowe or smugglers or MRV or Killingotn. Lower ny mountains are much more crowded even more crowded than southern vt mountains...yes even mt snow.

Lake Placid is awesome though much better than any vermont ski town hands down. It is even better as a summer town which many vt ski towns lack as a focus.

I might nominate burlington as a better ski town. It is not quite as close to skiing as LP but it has more diversity in skiing and quite frankly once you have to drive more than 15 minutes to get to a place what is the extra 20.

I could see a natural progression north as my ties to NYC diminish..

I like being a NYer... So the ADKs seem like the obvious place...

I spend a lot of time in LP and am a big fan of Whiteface, but I think the expansion won't drive up visits too much. Why?

1. The dirty secret is that only two of the trails will be skiable this year, and only the intermediate will have snowmaking. I'm not sure, but I don't think the glades will be fully thinned out in time for this upcoming season, either. Most likely, then, skiers for most of the season, barring a huge snow year, will take the triple to ski the one trail, end up at the base, and then have to take two lifts to get at the top of Lookout Mt.

2. There's been talk of refurbishing the old Porcupine Lodge at the summit of Lookout Mt., but no timetable is in place. WF forewent a good deal of additional press by not opening the warming hut, which should have been cheap and easy to fix up. Skiers want amenities, not just an extra lift and two trails.

3. To save money, WF is doing a lot of the work by themselves. Since when does a ski resort have the necessary skills/equipment on hand to manage such an expansion?

4. The expansion has to be one of the least hyped expansions of all time....

Not to be a "Debbie Downer", HPD, but this expansion has been poorly managed....Maybe in three to five years we'll have a new mountain worth bragging about.

we have nothing better to do so sure.

We've had over 200 inches each of the last 5 seasons, not northern Vt. but not bad.
agreed.
no argument but the average person the see's higher snowfall totals and that where they go.

Just to address the snowfall point....I don't think skiers spend a lot of time pouring over resorts' season-long average snowfalls (or, to be more precise, what resorts claim to be their totals....).

I think skiers usually pay attention to snow conditions and amount of open terrain. In that sense, any resort that has good snowmaking and grooming will be on skiers' radars, and Whiteface and Gore both have good snowmaking and grooming.

Yes, you'll get more powder in the trees on certain days in northern Vermont, but that doesn't mean, IMO, that skiers look at 275 inches a year vs. 200 inches a year and go from there in deciding where to go.

Now, don't get me started on how strange it is that a number of Vermont resorts all of a sudden (well, today vs. the 1980s, when I grew up skiing) went from getting whatever snow they used to get to now claiming they get almost as much snow a year as resorts in Colorado get....There's a lot of BS out there, if you ask me....

Thirdly, for some reason, when I talk to people down in the city, the dream is always to buy "an old farmhouse in Vermont". You rarely hear someone say "I just want an old victorian in Saranac Lake." I think that to a lot of people, Vermont still equals Eastern Skiing, and NY is just another place for them to go until they get their Vermont Trip together.

That's probably true. More city folk probably do dream more about Vermont and its old farmhouses, quaint covered bridges, church steeples, Robert Frost-iness, cute old town squares and maple syrup. That's cool, if that's what you're in to.

I think other people like the 'Dacks for its more outdoorsy spirit: the innumerable lakes and rivers, the wild mountains, the quiet (and relatively empty) woods, etc. Some bash the Adirondack Park Agency, but I think the public-private aspect of the largest park outside of Alaska gives the area a unique vibe.

Neither is better than the other. Different places for different folks. It's all good.

Mud, I know you a big WF fan, but you talkin mad crazy talk here.

1. 3 out of 4 will be skiable. The Wilmington Trail, Lookout Below will have snow making, Hoyts won't get snowmaking till next year. Glads, at least some of that hugh area will be open this season.

2. Porcupine Lodge is no biggie, it will be a nice add, but not really necessary.

3. Dude, WF has always cut new trails and installed snow making as far as I know. They hire out when needed of course. Nobody on the trail crew was flying those helicopters the last 2 days, getting cement up the mountain for the tower bases.

4. WF is marketing the expansion in every ad that I know of for this season and they did alot last season too.

I'm totally pleased with what they're getting down for this season. I'll bet you a beer you will be too.
